Sounds from Syria

Arablab, a band that blends Arabic music with experimental psychedelic sounds and subtle Latin improvisations, performs Saturday, May 4, 6 p.m. at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera.

Art in the Plaza

The monthly Art in the Plaza at Centro Laguna Mall -- behind Black Coffee & across from Walmart -- is Saturday, May 4 from 10-3. Enjoy live music while shopping under shaded tents from over 70 vendors selling gourmet food, art work in all disciplines, textiles, jewelry, photography, skin care and much more.

CREM concert

A concert by the local music school CREM Chorus and Children’s Chorus to benefit the music studio of the Centro de la Cultura y la Artes de la Ribera (CCAR) will be held Saturday, May 11, 7 p.m. at CCAR. Tickets, 200 pesos, are available at the CCAR box office.

Choral music at LLT

• The Mayahuel Women’s Choir will perform “Between the Sacred and the Profane,” an eclectic program of choral song under director Wilmia Verrier Quiñones, Sunday, May 12, 4 p.m.

• The Chamber Choir of the Universidad de Guadalajara Music Department will perform “Habaneras and Polyphonies,” excerpts from their program for a Spanish competition in July of this year, Sunday, May 12, 6:30 p.m.

Song and dance

A Night at the Opera on Broadway is the theme of two shows to be held at La Estacion Sourdough Pizza and Bakery performance space above Panchos Market in Riberas del Pilar, Saturday, May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, 4 to 6 p.m. The show features opera, Broadway and ballet. Singers are Douglas Voet, Victor Valdes and Brian Mathers (also on piano) and musicians Cesar Castro on piano, Gio Real on violin and Kristine Leigh as director. Four ballet performances from the students of Joven Ballet HH will also be included in the show. A portion of the proceeds will go toward this ballet company to help establish free ballet classes to lakeside children. Tickets, 300 pesos, are available at Huerto Café, Mia’s Boutique and La Estacion.

Summer Sounds

A free concert will be held on the Ajijic Malecon, Sunday, May 12, beginning 1 p.m. Performing will be Ave Paradiso, Los Delicados, Sobredosis Power Roots, La Sopa, Mary’s Island, Montnegro, LYXR, Pluma Vieja, Bahia Colores, and DJ Jhonny Guzman.

LLT auditions

The Lakeside Little Theatre is auditioning for three women (soprano, mezzo and alto) and two men (strong tenor and baritone) for “The World Goes Round” (The songs of  John Kander and Fred Ebb) with music. Auditions are Thursday and Friday, May 16 and 17, 1 to 4 p.m. (times by appointment). The show is scheduled for September 27 to October 6. Concerts in the park

“On the Radio,” a show by Nacho Granados and Chris Lopez, features the tunes from the radio that are in our memories, Sunday, May 19, 5:30 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society gardens as part of Steve Balfour’s Concerts in the Park series.
