New orchestra director to make official debut

Having previously worked with the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) as a guest conductor, Alondra de la Parra makes her official debut as artistic director at the Teatro Degollado this weekend.

The 31-year-old New York-born conductor will be joined by violin prodigy Chad Hoopes from Florida, making his first appearance in Mexico. Hoopes, 18, was invited to play with the JPO after first impressing de la Parra four years ago.

At a press conference on Thursday Hoopes said he was “ecstatic” to be reunited with Parra, who is “so much fun to work with.”

The JPO plays its third concert program of the six-concert season at the Teatro Degollado on Friday, June 22, 8.30 p.m. and Sunday, June 24, 12.30 p.m. Tickets cost 90 to 170 pesos.
