Rising US singing talent to debut with state orchestra

Soprano Megan Rose Williams, a vocal performance student from the Roosevelt University in Chicago, will sing the soprano solo in Mahler’s “Symphony No. 2,  Resurrection,” in this weekend’s concerts given by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.

According to the Roosevelt University website, Williams met JPO director Alondra de la Parra in April in rehearsals for Maurice Ravel’s Shéhérezade, which she sang with the Chicago College of Performing Arts Symphony Orchestra at Benito Juarez Community Academy in Chicago’s Pilsen community and in Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center in Chicago.

Apparently de la Parra was so impressed by Williams’ musicianship, vocal ability and passion that she extended the invitation to the singer on the spot.

Williams was one of the winners of last academic year’s student solo competition at the Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Williams was also invited by de la Parra to sing Mozart’s “Mass in C Minor” during the August 23-25 Music Festival of the Americas in Stowe, Vermont.

Also appearing this weekend with the JPO is U.S. mezzo-soprano Carla Dirlikov. She has performed throughout Europe and North America, and recently served as a U.S. cultural envoy to Mexico.

Teatro Degollado, Friday, July 6, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday July 8, 12:30 p.m. 90-170 pesos.
