Cirque du Soleil returns to Guadalajara

Cirque du Soleil returns to Guadalajara in August with Varekai, a touring production that is described as an “acrobatic tribute to the nomadic soul.”

The word Varekai means “wherever” in the Romany language of the gypsies. The show emphasizes the spirit and art of the circus tradition, explains the Cirque du Soleil website.

Although some reviewers say the story line on the show is fairly loose, most praise the energy and talents of the performers. “Almost every act is original, exciting and unforgettable,” wrote one reviewer at theatermania.com.

Formed in 1984, Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil calls itself “a dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment.”

Those who have never seen Cirque du Soleil live before should make an effort to see this show. Don’t go expecting Ringling Bros fare; rather you will be stunned by the amazing acrobats, costumes and music.

The five performances take place in a large tent that will be erected in the Explanada Lopez Mateos, a huge open space at the corner of Cubilete and Lopez Mateos, three blocks from Plaza del Sol.

Show times are: Friday, August 16, 9 p.m.; Saturday, August 17, 5:30 and 9 p.m.; and Sunday, August 18, 1:30 and 5 p.m. Tickets cost from 750 to 2,520 pesos. They can be purchased from Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.com.mx or (33) 3818-3800.
