Joven Ballet tackles work set to Gershwin’s music

The Joven Ballet, Jalisco’s only fully professional dance company, go upbeat for their latest show, “Who Cares?”

Created by the co-founder of the New York City Ballet, George Balanchine, the ballet pays homage to Manhattan with 17 classically choreographed pieces to songs composed by George Gershwin between 1924 and 1931.  The work premiered in 1970 at the New York State Theater.

This is a great opportunity to listen to some nostalgic music while witnessing first-hand the amazing talent Jalisco is developing in the world of dance.   Hear numbers such as “Clap Yo’ Hands,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Strike Up The Band,” Lady Be Good” and others.  Balanchine, one of the 20th century’s most prolific choreographers, was the New York City Ballet’s balletmaster for more than 35 years.

“Who Cares?” is staged at the Teatro Degollado on Friday, September 12, 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, September 13, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, September 14, 12:30 p.m.  Tickets 70-300 pesos.

Coming up later this year for the Joven Ballet are performances of the ballet adaptation of Rimsky-Korsakov’s primal work “Sheherazade” October 17-19, and the traditional Christmas crowd-pleaser “The Nutcracker” December 19-21.
