Monday music

Classical recitals are held each Monday at this classy and relatively new cultural complex to the north of the city. April 24: Charlie Jazz and his quartet continue their history of jazz series.

Tuesday recitals

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. 

April 25:  Mezzosoprano Teresa Banderas and guitarrist  José Guadalupe López Luévano (above) interpret Mexican and Spanish romantic songs and boleros.

May 2: “Gala lírica”with baritone Víktor Julio Bohórquez Rodríguez and pianist Rodrigo Leal. Works from popular operas by Mozart, Bizet, Verdi and others.

May 9: “Crisol sonoro” featuring Anahí Pichardo and Esmeralda Camacho on violin, Ernesto Perez Corona on viola and Omar Aceves on cello. Invited guest: Enrique Cabrera on the vihuela.

May 16: Quintet plays selection of music from Europe and the New World 

May 23: “Sacred music, arias and Mexican songs.” Alan Hernandez (tenor), Jessica Alcala (soprano) and  Héctor Miguel Ocampo (piano). Works by Puccini, Verdi, Handel, as well as Manuel M. Ponce, Agustin Lara (“Granada”), Consuelo Velazquez (“Besame mucho”) among others. 

May 30: “Transparencias” with Cuauhtémoc García Verdugo (flute) and Edith Ruiz Zepeda (piano).

Ballet de Jalisco

A ballet adaptation of the Hunchback of Notre Dame for adults and kids.

International Dance Day 

This worldwide day is celebrated with two free performances featuring some of Jalisco’s top talent, in a diverse selection of genres, from a classical to contemporary and folk.

Camille Thurman Quartet

Presented by the NY Jazz All Stars. Thurman is multitalented young saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer and educator whose lush, velvety and warm sound has been compared to greats such as Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon and Lester Young. Her vocals remind many of Minnie Riperton, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

Shaolin Warriors

In this all-new, fully choreographed theatrical production, the Shaolin Warriors bring remarkable skill, stunning movement and death-defying martial-arts prowess to the stage. The Zen Buddhist monks of the Shaolin temple begin training at a very young age in mental and physical disciplines. They perfect the art of hand-to-hand and weapons combat, performing feats live on stage typially seen only in the movies.

The May Cultural Festival opens with a performance of future jazz by trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær (above) and his band from Norway.

Live from the Met

The New York Met presents a simulcast of R. Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier.” The dream cast features Renée Fleming as the Marschallin and Elīna Garanča as Octavian star in Strauss’s grandest opera. In his new production, Robert Carsen places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, in a staging that also stars Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs.

Kill Carmen

MAY CULTURAL FESTIVAL. The Compañía Kaari & Roni Martin from Spain is a contemporary dance company  known for its absurd aesthetics. The ensemble’s Kill Carmen show is simultaneously crude and cruel, alluring and twisted. Roni Martin’s orchestra masterfully combines funk, flamenco and Balkan influences.

Lucky Chops

A five-member New York City brass band that seamlessly fuses the energy of a rock band with the dance-ability of an electronic dance music DJ.  Came to fame in 2015 after being discovered playing on the subway network.

The Phantom of the Opera

Produced by Victorian Goth Productions and directed and adapted by Jorge Cordova, this version of the classic musical work features 18 professional singers, with  tenor Jorge Jimenez and soprano Nitza Oremort as the leads.  Also seven dancers and eight actors.

Clayton Brothers

Presented by the NY Jazz All Stars. This quintet is the brainchild of Jeff Clayton, who plays alto sax and oboe, in addition to the French horn and flute. He has recorded with many well-known musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle and Earth Wind & Fire. Brother John Clayton is a bassist and worked for the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the artistic director of jazz from 1998 through 2001.

Walter Blanding Quartet

GR RECOMMENDS: Live from the Met

The New York Met presents a simulcast Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.” Pushkin’s timeless novel is presented on the Met stage in Deborah Warner’s moving production, starring the great Anna Netrebko as Tatiana and Mariusz Kwiecien and Peter Mattei sharing the title role. Alexey Dolgov sings the role of Lenski, and Robin Ticciati conducts.
