Monday music

Concerts are held each Monday at this classy and relatively new cultural complex to the north of the city.

July 10: Duo Preciado-Salvador, the multi-limbed music-making organism consisting of pianists Rosalinda Preciado and Guillermo Salvador, The repertoire, yet to be programed, will be performed by the two virtuosos on a single piano.  July 17: Violinst Erika Dobosiewicz and pianist Rodrigo Sierra Moncayo, the former a featured performer in the CDMX Philharmonic and the latter the Zapopan Youth Orchestra’s director, offer a diverse program, including pieces by Bach, Piazolla, and film composer John Williams. Palcco, Monday, 8 p.m. 100 pesos.

Tuesday recitals

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals.       July 11: An ensemble consisting of a two singers (a bass and a soprano) and a pianist present “El concierto de una rosa”, a concert featuring music ranging from German lieder to Spanish Zarzuela.  July 18: Fleet-fingered pianist Patricia Garcia presents a program featuring classical giants Debussy, Schubert, Ravel, as well as Arturo Marquez, a well-respected modern Mexican composer.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra & Tambuco

Gershwin, Reveultos, Marquez and Alvarez are the featuring composer in the final concert of the summer season. Marco Parisotto conducts, with percussion group Tambuco the invitees.

Folk dance

Regarded as the best folk dance troupe in Mexico, the Ballet Folklorico of the Universidad de Guadalajara returns for another season of summer shows on Sunday evenings. See dances from all over the country, as well as emotive local favorites, such as the “Jarabe Tapatio” and “La Culebra.” Not to be missed!

Teatro Degollado, Sundays: July 9 and 23; August 6, 13 and 20; September 3, 10 and 17. All start at 6 p.m. 100-420 pesos.

The Netherlands Dance Company

After a two-decade absence, the Netherlands Dance Theater is back. The 58-year-old company will present kinetically exquisite work from their in house corp of choreographers, which include Hans Van Manen, Johan Inger, Edward Clug and director Paul Lightfoot.

Antonio Gades FlamencoCompany

CIA Antonio Gades, one of the most prestigious flamenco dance companies of our time, offer a spectacle sure to sizzle and pop your sexual circuitry.  Named in honor of its deceased founder, the company is currently under the direction of Stella Arauzo and Dominique You.

The San Juan de Dios tren lijero station hosts a free concert as part of the Jalisco Jazz Festival.  The featured group is gypsy jazz group Oui Manouche, whose core members are Carlos Garrett on guitar, and Evaristo Leytte on upright bass.

JJF 2017: Jazz Route Guadalajara

Offered as a part of the Jalisco Jazz Festival, Ruta del Jazz Guadalajara offers five concerts at two venues known for their dedication to improvised music, Primer Piso and Gin Club. The featured groups are Blue Sarape, Pneumus, Dante Laricchia, Samantha Band and Afrodisaicos.

Primer Piso and Gin Club, both located at Pedro Moreno 947-1 and 2, corner of Escorza. Saturday, July 15, 9:15 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. Total cost, which includes one beer, is 300 pesos.

Modern Dance Legend Yumiko Yoshioka

The Japanese dance veteran, based in Berlin since 1988, presents a solo work entitled “100 Años Luz de Soledad,” a work inspired by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ famous novel.

The Pink Floyd Show

Harley Davidson and W Agency present an homage to the great progressive space rock band that came out of Britain in the late 1960s, most well-known for their albums “The Dark Side of the Moon” and “The Wall.”  The two aforementioned enterprises dig into their deep pockets to put together a crack team of visual artists, technicians and musicians for a mind-expanding trip through time and space.

Soundtrack to Miyazaki’s Spirited Away for solo piano

Fans of the films of Japanese animation auteur Hayao Miyazaki won’t want to miss this event, a concert by pianist /arranger Roberto Salamón featuring the music from the film Spirited Away.  If Salamón’s performance a few weeks ago of music from the French film Amelie is any indication, this should be a must see for Miyazaki fans.

US National Youth Orchestra

Launched in the summer of 2013, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States played venues around the world to great acclaim, from Saint Petersburg to Los Angeles.  This year marks the orchestra’s Central and South American debut, which will be under the direction of conductor Marin Alsop.  The concert’s program is TBA.

Miles Davis & Gil Evans

As a part of the Jalisco Jazz Festival, Gil Cervantes and his orchestra present a program of music paying tribute to one of the mid-20th Century’s greatest partnerships: jazz trumpet giant Miles Davis and arranger/conductor Gil Evans.  Together, these two men gifted to the world vinyl masterpieces such as Porgy and Bess, Miles Ahead, and most prominently, Sketches of Spain.  Bravely holding down the trumpet chair will be Canadian Lina Allemano.

Argentinian jazz singer Karen Souza will kick off the Jalisco Jazz Festival, happening July13-August 4.  The South American chanteuse pulls from a wide-ranging repertoire, from jazz standards to hits by the likes of Depeche Mode and Radiohead. Keep an eye out for other JJF events on this page in the coming weeks.
