Music from the movies: state orchestra serves up appetizing pre-season fare

Film music is a surefire crowd-pleaser.

With that verity in mind, the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra will offer a curtain-raiser to its fall season with two concerts featuring works from some of the most iconic and popular movies of the past half-century, Friday, September 8, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 10, 12:30 p.m. at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara.

During the first half of the concert, the orchestra, directed and conducted by guest Enrique Radillo, will play arrangements of music from “2001: Spacey Odyssey” (Strauss), the 2005 version of “King Kong” (James Newton Howard), “The Lord of the Rings” (Howard Shore), “Pirates of the Caribbean” (Zimmer), “Gladiator” (again, Zimmer), and the “Magnificent Seven” (Elmer Bernstein).

After intermission, the ensemble will crank out themes by John Williams, that most bankable of film composers. Themes from “Jurassic Park” and “Harry Potter” will precede the absurdly iconic leitmotifs and fanfares of “Star Wars” – quite possibly the most widely identifiable compositions in the history of mankind.

Tickets for the two concerts, from 150 to 300 pesos, can be purchased at the Teatro Degollado box office or online at ticketmaster.com.mx.  There’s 30 percent off for seniors, students, teachers and the handicapped, for tickets to be purchased at the theater.  Go to ofj.com.mx for more information regarding the upcoming season, which gets fully underway September 14 and 17, with a program featuring works by well-known Mexican composers (see page 23).
