Folk dance
Regarded as the best folk dance troupe in Mexico, the Ballet Folklorico of the Universidad de Guadalajara returns for another season of summer shows on Sunday evenings.
See dances from all over the country, as well as emotive local favorites, such as the “Jarabe Tapatio” and “La Culebra.” Not to be missed!

Monday concerts
Concerts/recitals are held each Monday at this classy and relatively new cultural complex to the north of the city. September 4: Recital by U.S. flutist Ray Furuta, with soprano Malinda Haslett. September 11: Klaus Mayer Big Band pays homage to Ella Fitzgerald. September 18: Charlie Jazz interprets Frank Sinatra (part 2). September 25: Canadian violinist Chris Wilshere, accompanied by the Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Guadalajara.

Tuesday recitals
The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. September 12: Recital by Georgina Oñate Aguirre (flute) and Luis Javier Ochoa Santana (guitar). September 19: Recital with Virginia Mora (soprano), Edna Alatorre Lobato (mezzo-soprano) and Fernando López Hernádez (tenor), accompanied by Jorge Luis Godínez on piano. Pieces by Puccini, Donizetti, Offenbach, Rachmaninoff, María Grever and others. Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The state orchestra gets its fall season underway with a special program dedicated to Mexican composers. Topping the bill will be Jose Pablo Moncayo’s moving “Huapango” composition. Also, pieces by Silvestre Revueltas and Arturo Marquez will be featured. Young, locally-born composer Juan Pablo Contreras will be on hand to conduct the Guadalajara debut of his latest work, “Mariachitlan.” JPO Musical Director Marco Parisotto takes the baton and Carlos Prieto, one of Mexico’s leading cellists, is the invited soloist. Amazingly, ticket prices are still the same as last year. In fact, they have not changed for the past five years!
