Folk dance

The 2018 season of one of Mexico’s premier dance groups, the University of Guadalajara’s Ballet Folclorico, is now underway.  Founded in 1960, the acclaimed troupe is currently made up of about 168 singers, dancers and musicians.

Contemporary Mondays

The “Sesiones de Música Popular Contemporánea” series of Monday concerts features talented local musicians. February 26: Fanko Acústico, an eight-member band, plays funk, African rhythms, Mexican and world music. March 5: Pulsating Afrobeat music from Bogotá Orquesta Afrobeat (La BOA) from Colombia. March 12:  Latino sounds from La Orilla.

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. February 27: Recital featuring artists from the Northern Lights Festival de Febrero in Ajijic. March 6: Christohper Wilshere (violin) and Manuel Delaflor (piano). March 13: Pieces by Mozart interpreted by Susana Flores (soprano), José Méndez (tenor), Jorge Amezcua (baritone) and Paco Ramos (piano).

Angèle Dubeau

Angèle Dubeau & La Pietà is a string orchestra with piano created in 1997, composed of top-ranking female musicians, among the best in Canada.  This concert kicks off the Universidad de Guadalajara’s “Música en el Paraninfo” series.  They will perform works by Vivaldi, Saint-Saëns, Ludovico Einaudi, Ennio Morricone, Philip Glass, George Enescu, Irving Glick, Max Richter and Joe Hisaishi.

Bowie tribute

David Brighton’s Space Oddity show pays tribute to legendary, protean force of nature, singer David Bowie, who died in early 2016.  Brighton is considered one of the best Bowie imitator currently working.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Orchestra interprets Mexican composer Armando Luna’s Sinfonía No. 2 Homenaje a Posadas, and Fratres by Estonian composer Arvo Part, with JPO violinist Maxwell Pardo as soloist. The grand finale is Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44.

Countertenors

Acclaimed English countertenor Michael Chance joins Santiago Cumplido for what promises to be a fascinating – and reasonably priced – concert. Chance’s appearances in oratorio and recital have taken him to concert halls all over the world including Carnegie Hall,  Cumplido, also a countertenor, is considered one of Mexico’s most talented young singers.
