Folk dance
The 2018 season of one of Mexico’s premier dance groups, the University of Guadalajara’s Ballet Folclorico, is now underway. Founded in 1960, the acclaimed troupe is currently made up of about 168 singers, dancers and musicians.

Live telecast of Rossini’s “Semiramide.” This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance – its first in nearly 25 years – with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong.

Modern dance
Dancers from the Ljubljana SNG Opera and Ballet present the work “A Symphony of Sorrowful Songs,” a work featuring Polish composer Henryk Mikołai Górecki’s Symphony Number 3. The ballet, created by Tomaž Pandur who died in 2016 at the age of 53, is described as an hypnotic, intense and moving reflection on what it means to be human.

Acclaimed English countertenor Michael Chance joins Santiago Cumplido (right) for what promises to be a fascinating – and reasonably priced – concert. Chance’s appearances in oratorio and recital have taken him to concert halls all over the world including Carnegie Hall. Cumplido, also a countertenor, is considered one of Mexico’s most talented young singers. Also featuring Natalia de la Torre (soprano), Alex Jenne (theorbo), Rafael Cardenas (harpsichord) and the Higinio Ruvalcaba chamber orchestra. Rebecca Huber is the concertmaster.
