Folk dance

The 2018 season of one of Mexico’s premier dance groups, the University of Guadalajara’s Ballet Folclorico, is now underway.  Founded in 1960, the acclaimed troupe is currently made up of about 168 singers, dancers and musicians.

Contemporary Mondays

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. March 13: Pieces by Mozart interpreted by Susana Flores (soprano), José Méndez (tenor), Jorge Amezcua (baritone) and Paco Ramos (piano).

Live from the Met

Live telecast of Rossini’s “Semiramide.” This masterpiece of dazzling vocal fireworks makes a rare Met appearance – its first in nearly 25 years – with Maurizio Benini on the podium. The all-star bel canto cast features Angela Meade in the title role of the murderous Queen of Babylon, who squares off in breathtaking duets with Arsace, a trouser role sung by Elizabeth DeShong.

Modern dance

Dancers from the Ljubljana SNG Opera and Ballet present the work “A Symphony of Sorrowful Songs,” a work featuring Polish composer Henryk Mikołai Górecki’s Symphony Number 3. The ballet, created by Tomaž Pandur who died in 2016 at the age of 53, is described as an hypnotic, intense and moving reflection on what it means to be human.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Orchestra interprets Mexican composer Armando Luna’s Sinfonía No. 2 Homenaje a Posadas, and Fratres by Estonian composer Arvo Part, with JPO violinist Maxwell Pardo as soloist. The grand finale is Sergei Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44.

Ballet de Jalisco

After receiving rave reviews in previous years, the Ballet de Jalisco returns with  seven presentations of the ballet “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” featuring the music of Rachmaninoff,  Tchaikowsky, Wolf-Ferrari, Saint-Säenz, Moniuszko, and Khachaturian. Choreography is by troupe director Dariusz Blajer.

Telecast direct from New York of Verdi’s Luisa Miller. Plácido Domingo adds yet another role to his legendary Met career in this rarely performed Verdi gem, a heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczała in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years.

Telecast direct from New York of Cendrillon.  Jules Massenet’s sumptuous take on the Cinderella story comes to the Met, with Joyce DiDonato starring in the title role. She is paired with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts Laurent Pelly’s imaginative storybook production.

The Scorpions

Acclaimed English countertenor Michael Chance joins Santiago Cumplido (right) for what promises to be a fascinating – and reasonably priced – concert. Chance’s appearances in oratorio and recital have taken him to concert halls all over the world including Carnegie Hall. Cumplido, also a countertenor, is considered one of Mexico’s most talented young singers.  Also featuring Natalia de la Torre (soprano), Alex Jenne (theorbo), Rafael Cardenas (harpsichord) and the Higinio Ruvalcaba chamber orchestra.  Rebecca Huber is the concertmaster.
