Tuesday recitals
The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals.
July 3: Pianist Sergio Hernandez plays works by Mozart, Schumann, Gershwin, Chopin and Ponce. July 10: Soprano Estefanía Avilez, accompanied by Timothy Ruff Welch (above) on piano, interprets pieces and arias by Massenet, Bizet, Mozart, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, among others.

Romantic trios
Two of Mexico’s most famous “romantic trios” team up for a concert that will delight a mature audience: Gabriel Vargas’ Los Panchos (above) and Armando Navarro’s Los Dandys.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The first half of the fourth program will feature two Mozart piano concertos, with invited pianists Christine Gerwig, Efraín González and Alejandro González Gerwig. The orchestra interprets Franz Liszt’s Hunnenschlacht (The Battle of the Huns) and Wellington’s Victory, composed by Beethoven to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s triumph over Joseph Bonaparte at the Battle of Vitoria in Spain in June 1813, in the latter section of the performance.

Zarzuela
“La Verbena de la Paloma,” a zarzuela by Tomas Breton, will feature the Zapopan Symphony Orchestra, stage direction by Leopoldo Falcon and choral direction by Sergio Dario. Zarzuela is a type of Spanish opera featuring wildly colorful dress, singing and dancing. The form dates back the 17th century.

Yann Tiersen
Avant garde French musician and composer, whose music involves a large variety of instruments – the guitar, piano, synthesizer or violin together with instruments such as the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, harpsichord, accordion and typewriter.

Slava’s Snow Show
Stunning show put on by legendary Russian clown Slava Polunin is an indescribable blend of comedy, spectacle and poignantly fantastical images. Great entertainment for both adults and kids.

The final program of the summer season sees the return to Guadalajara of virtuoso U.S. violinist Esther Yoo. The first ever artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic, she will be the soloist in Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. The performance will end with Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, Sz.116.

Circus arts
The 6th Festival Periplo 2018, billed as an “International Circus Gala,” begins with a show featuring a plethora of invited artists from around the world. They include Wes Peden, a juggler from the United States; Florence Huet, a hula hooper from France; Aimé Morales, a cyr wheeler from Venezuela; and Chula the Clown, from Mexico.

The Ballet Folclorico Infantil de la
Universidad de Guadalajara showcases some of the best young folk dancers in the state.

The Allegro! Gala International de Danza features Tapatio dancer Enrique Bejarano, who recently was awarded the Grand Prix of New York Prize. Additionally, the production showcases dancers from the Washington Ballet.

The final program of the summer season – before the musicians take their annual break – sees the return to Guadalajara of virtuoso U.S. violinist Esther Yoo. The first ever artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Yoo is acclaimed for her “dark, aristocratic tone” (Gramophone Magazine) and “impeccable artistry” (South Florida Classical Review). She first came to international attention in 2010 when aged 16 she became the youngest prizewinner of the 10th International Sibelius Violin Competition. She will be the soloist in Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. The performance will end with Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, Sz.116.
