The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. July 10: Soprano Estefanía Avilez, accompanied by Timothy Ruff Welch on piano, interprets pieces and arias by Massenet, Bizet, Mozart, Rossini, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, among others. Zarzuela
“La Verbena de la Paloma,” a zarzuela by Tomas Breton, will feature the Zapopan Symphony Orchestra, stage direction by Leopoldo Falcon and choral direction by Sergio Dario. Zarzuela is a type of Spanish opera featuring wildly colorful dress, singing and dancing. The form dates back to the 17th century.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The first half of the fourth program will feature two Mozart piano concertos, with invited pianists Christine Gerwig, Efraín González and Alejandro González Gerwig. The orchestra interprets Franz Liszt’s Hunnenschlacht (The Battle of the Huns) and Wellington’s Victory, composed by Beethoven to commemorate the Duke of Wellington’s triumph over Joseph Bonaparte at the Battle of Vitoria in Spain in June 1813, in the latter section of the performance.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
The final program of the summer season sees the return to Guadalajara of virtuoso U.S. violinist Esther Yoo. The first ever artist-in-residence with the Royal Philharmonic, she will be the soloist in Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. The performance will end with Bela Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, Sz.116.

Circus arts
The 6th Festival Periplo 2018, billed as an “International Circus Gala,” begins with a show featuring a plethora of invited artists from around the world. They include Wes Peden, a juggler from the United States; Florence Huet, a hula hooper from France; Aimé Morales, a cyr wheeler from Venezuela; and Gabriela Muñoz, alias Chula the Clown, from Mexico.

Marquis Hill Quartet
Award-winning trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Marquis Hill is a highly skilled jazz musician with a bent toward soulful post-bop. A native of Chicago, Hill won first place in both the 2012 International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Improvisation Competition and the 2013 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. He has performed with a wide array of artists including Benny Golson, Rodney Whitaker, Steve Turre, and others. He released his debut album, New Gospel, in 2011, followed by Sounds of the City in 2012. His third full-length album, The Poet, appeared in 2013. In 2014, Hill gained even further acclaim by winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute’s International Jazz Competition.

Traditional Mariachi Festival
As in past years, the 13th Encuentro Nacional del Mariachi Tradicional (Traditional Mariachi Festival) will precede the big annual mariachi bash, with performances scheduled at several city venues from August 18 to 24. Whereas the modern mariachi band with its mix of brass and strings, charro outfits and big, bold sound has come to represent Mexico and Jalisco in particular throughout the world, traditional mariachi musicians represent a style closer to son music, the form that gave birth to mariachi in the 19th century. They often wear much less ostentatious loose-fitting white peasant shirts, usually with black or white pants and huarache sandals. The big difference, though, is that they do not employ brass instruments, sticking with guitars and violins, guitars and harps, or some other mix of string instruments.
