Traditional Mariachi Festival
As in past years, the 13th Encuentro Nacional del Mariachi Tradicional (Traditional Mariachi Festival) will precede the big annual mariachi bash, with performances scheduled at several city venues from August 18 to 24. Whereas the modern mariachi band with its mix of brass and strings, charro outfits and big, bold sound has come to represent Mexico, and Jalisco in particular, throughout the world, traditional mariachi musicians represent a style closer to son music, the form that gave birth to mariachi in the 19th century. They often wear much less ostentatious, loose-fitting white peasant shirts, usually with black or white pants and huarache sandals. The big difference, though, is that they do not employ brass instruments, sticking with guitars and violins, guitars and harps, or some other mix of string instruments.

Marquis Hill Quartet
Award-winning trumpeter, composer and bandleader Marquis Hill is a highly skilled jazz musician with a bent toward soulful post-bop. A native of Chicago, Hill won first place in both the 2012 International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Improvisation Competition and the 2013 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. He has performed with a wide array of artists including Benny Golson, Rodney Whitaker, Steve Turre, and others.

Cirque du Soleil
The famed Montreal-based troupe brings its Mexican-themed show, Luzia, to Guadalajara for a series of presentations. Luzia is inspired by the richness of the Mexican culture, its name fusing the sound of luz (light in Spanish) and lluvia (rain), two elements at the core of the show’s creation. The show features a cast of 44 artists from 15 countries and is Cirque du Soleil’s 38th production since 1984. Its promoters here describe the show as “a sumptuous journey through an imaginary Mexico – a surreal world suspended between dreams and real life.”

Catherine Russell quartet
Catherine Russell is a U.S. vocalist whose father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, held degrees from both Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music and performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm during World War II. With Russell’s deep and genuine roots in jazz and the blues, a reputation for talent and quality performances, significant exposure in the country’s jazz and other music venues (including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center), Russell has become well known in jazz circles and, as of January 2014, was the second best-selling female artist on several jazz charts.

GR RECOMMENDS: Mariachi galas
The gala concerts at the majestic Teatro Degollado are among the high points of the International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara, scheduled August 22 to September 2. On six evenings during the festival, the country’s top mariachi groups perform alongside the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in lively and emotional performances. The high-end ticket prices help fund many of the festival’s free events.

Disney on Ice at Auditorio Telmex
All those lovable Disney characters will be sliding, twirling and jumping ona frozen block of water at another summer vacation presentation of Disney on Ice at the Auditorio Telmex in Zapopan.
Tickets range from the very affordable 150 pesos to 1,350 pesos, but be warned, the cheap seats are in the very highest part of the vast auditorium and offer only a distant view of proceedings and may be a let down for the young ones.
The action begins with a single show on Wednesday, August 8, 6 p.m. Other shows: Thursday, August 9, 4 and 7:30 p.m.; Friday, August 10, noon, 4 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, August 11, noon, 4 and 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, August 12, noon, 4 and 7:30 p.m.
