Marquis Hill Quartet
Award-winning trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Marquis Hill is a highly skilled jazz musician with a bent toward soulful post-bop. A native of Chicago, Hill won first place in both the 2012 International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Improvisation Competition and the 2013 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. He has performed with a wide array of artists including Benny Golson, Rodney Whitaker, Steve Turre, and others.

Mariachi galas
The gala concerts at the majestic Teatro Degollado are among the high points of the International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara, scheduled August 22 to September 2. On six evenings during the festival, the country’s top mariachi groups perform alongside the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in lively and emotional performances.

Cirque du Soleil
The famed Montreal-based troupe brings its Mexican-themed show, Luzia, to Guadalajara for a series of presentations. Luzia is inspired by the richness of the Mexican culture, its name fusing the sound of luz (light in Spanish) and lluvia (rain), two elements at the core of the show’s creation. The show features a cast of 44 artists from 15 countries and is Cirque du Soleil’s 38th production since 1984. Its promoters in this country describe the show as “a sumptuous journey through an imaginary Mexico – a surreal world suspended between dreams and real life.”

Catherine Russell Quartet
U.S. vocalist whose father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, held degrees from both Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music and performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm during World War II.

Strangelove

Carmen, Bolero
The Ballet de Jalisco, the state’s only full-time professional classical dance troupe, presents an adaptation of this famed Spanish piece, accompanied by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra. With music by Rodión Schedrin, based on Bizet’s original score, this will be a world premiere featuring new choreography by Mark Godden. Also, a performance of Ravel’s Bolero, with choreography by Ballet de Jalisco director Dariusz Blajer.

Les Balletde Montecarlo
Premier European dance troupe presents “Swan Lake.” Thirty dancers are expected in Guadalajara to perform ballet’s most famous and adored work. Established in 1985, the troupe is the official company of the Principality of Monaco.
