Mariachi galas

The gala concerts at the majestic Teatro Degollado are among the high points of the International Mariachi Festival in Guadalajara, scheduled August 22 to September 2.  On six evenings during the festival, the country’s top mariachi groups perform alongside the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra in lively and emotional performances.

Cirque du Soleil

The famed Montreal-based troupe brings its Mexican-themed show, Luzia, to Guadalajara for a series of presentations. Luzia is  inspired by the richness of the Mexican culture, its name fusing the sound of luz (light in Spanish) and lluvia (rain), two elements at the core of the show’s creation.  The show features a cast of 44 artists from 15 countries and is Cirque du Soleil’s 38th production since 1984. Its promoters in this country describe the show as “a sumptuous journey through an imaginary Mexico – a surreal world suspended between dreams and real life.”

Catherine Russell Quartet

U.S. vocalist whose father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director. Her mother, the late Carline Ray, held degrees from both Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music and performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm during World War II.

Strangelove

The Ballet de Jalisco, the state’s only full-time professional classical dance troupe, presents adaptations of these famed Spanish-themed pieces, accompanied by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra.

Dutch dancers

The Nederlands Dans Theater is a highly regarded Dutch contemporary dance company headquartered at the Lucent Danstheater in The Hague. Formed in 1959, the company is currently under the direction of Janine Dijkmeijer and Paul Lightfoot. They are retuning to the Diana after thrilling audiences here in 2017.

Les Balletde Montecarlo

Premier European dance troupe presents “Swan Lake.”  Thirty dancers are expected in Guadalajara to perform ballet’s most famous and adored work. Established in 1985, the troupe is the official company of the Principality of Monaco.

OPENING PARADE

Sunday, August 26. The desfile is one of the annual fixtures of the event, showcasing an unparalleled assembly of mariachi groups of all types – from the most traditional non-brass peasant groups to modern, gleaming ensembles. The parade starts at the Glorieta Niños Heroes at 10 a.m. and heads down the entire length of Avenida Chapultepec. It’s a great spectacle but get there early for a good view.
