Folk dance
The acclaimed Ballet Folclórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara returns to the stage for a short summer season.
First-timers to Mexico should not miss the opportunity to witness the color, folklore and passion of these shows, which pay homage to the multitude of dances, music and costumes found throughout the republic. Take a journey from pre-Hispanic times, through various states, including Michoacan and Veracruz, to the epic and emotive Jalisco finale.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra
Jesus Medina directs the OFJ and German-Canadian-American trumpet soloist and UCLA professor Jens Lindemann in what may be Haydn’s most popular concerto, “Concierto para trompeta y orquesta en mi bemol mayor” (Trumpet concerto in E-flat major). Also scheduled are Mozart’s “Sinfonía Núm. 35, Haffner” (Symphony No. 35 – the Haffner Symphony), which began as a serenade for a nobleman; along with Aaron Copland’s one-movement symphony, “El Salon Mexico,” and Scottish-Canadian composer Allan Gilliland’s 2003 jazz concerto for clarinet and orchestra, “Dreaming of the Masters.”

Paul Nedzela has become one of today’s top baritone saxophone players. He has played with many renowned artists and ensembles, and studied with some of the foremost baritone saxophonists in the world, including Joe Temperley, Gary Smulyan, and Roger Rosenberg.

Continental orchestra
The Orchestra of the Americas (Orquesta de las Américas) is a pan-American symphony of top musicians, ages 18 to 30, representing 25-plus countries in the Western Hemisphere. The orchestra’s mission is to empower rising musical leaders to transform lives across the Americas and beyond.

Lindsey Sterling

Aside from original work, her discography contains covers of songs by other musicians and various sound tracks.

Jerome Jennings Quartet
The Jazz At Lincoln Center series continues with a performance by a quartet led by drummer Jerome Jennings who has played every major jazz club in New York City from The Village Vanguard, Birdland and The BlueNote, to Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. Internationally he’s performed in over 45 countries. In the fall of 2017, Jennings accepted the position as resident director of The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra.

GR RECOMMENDS: Del Toro’s film scores
A one-off concert featuring the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (OFJ) has been planned in tandem with film director Guillermo del Toro’s “Monsters” exhibit currently running at the Museo de las Artes. The orchestra will perform music from the soundtracks of many of Del Toro’s films. Conducting the OFJ will be Tim Davies, an Australian orchestrator and composer for film, television, video games and the concert stage. Davies has collaborated with Del Toro on several projects, including “Crimson Peak” and “Trollhunters.” Other credits of his include “The Lego Movie 2,” “Ant-Man” and the Wasp,” “Hotel Transylvania 3,” “Empire,” “La La Land,” “Minions” and “Frozen.”
The concert is scheduled Sunday, July 28, 4 p.m. at the Auditorio Telmex. Entry will be free, but getting tickets will be complex, apparently including visits to the auditorium box office, the Museo de las Artes box office and Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) social media sites.
