‘Urban forest’ is backdrop for striking illustrations of indigenous words

Within the framework of the Guadalajara World Book Capital 2022, Parque Agua Azul is hosting an exhibit of eye-catching murals created by individual artists on five-meter-wide metal panels lining the park’s imposing entrance near the city center.

Each colorful work of art, naturally enough considering sponsorship by the months-long book event, focuses on language—specifically an individual word from several of Mexico’s indigenous and endangered tongues: Maya, Náhuatl, Mazateco and Zapoteca.

The exhibit, entitled “Intraducibles” (Untranslatable), is brimming with appeal, not only due to the colorful pieces, but also its sponsors—especially UNESCO, the United Nations agency that promotes world peace through education, arts, sciences and culture. UNESCO is a principal sponsor of Guadalajara Capital Mundial del Libro 2022, which is manifesting throughout the downtown area.

“It is an exhibition that is fundamentally about the richness of Mexico’s 150 native languages. This is a small sample of this enormous range of cultures that are part of our identity,” said Dolores Garnica, coordinator of Literature and Visual Arts at the Guadalajara Culture Department, during the inauguration of the exhibit last month.
