Equestrianism at its very best

As its name infers, the festival also incorporates Charrería, Mexico’s equestrian equivalent to rodeo.

This is a great chance for those unfamiliar with this essentially Mexican activity to witness and learn about its spectacular and dare-devil disciplines.

The 21st Campeonato Charrería takes place Saturday, August 27 at the Lienzo Los Tres Potrillos (Arena VFG) on the Guadalajara-Chapala highway, easily accessible from the Lake Chapala area. The event runs all day, from around 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., but spectators can come and go as they please. Thankfully, the arena, part of the Vicente Fernandez ranch complex, is fully covered, and there is parking available.

A thrilling part of the event are the displays by escaramuzas (teams of colorfully dressed female riders performing equestrian maneuvers in brilliant synchronization). These are scheduled at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.  Entry fee: 100 pesos.
