Over the next two weeks, Guadalajara’s Festival Cultural de Mayo serves up six promising shows at the Teatro Degollado, starting Friday, May 19, 8:30 p.m. with a piano recital by Spain’s Martín García García, the winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2021.
The next four performances will be “kept in the family,” featuring an intriguing combination of (either as soloists, as a duo or all together) Russian-German-Jewish pianist Lilly Zilberstein, and her two pianist sons Anton and Daniel Gerzenberg.
These talented and acclaimed musicians will be together on stage on Wednesday, May 24, 8:30 p.m. to get the ball rolling with a recital titled “Piano 2+4+6.” After performing works by Franz Schubert and Carl Czerny (six hands, see photo above) during the first half the recital, the pianists will interpret Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and close with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, Opus 45, for 2 pianos, 4 hands.
Two days later, on Friday, May 26, 8:30 p.m., 27-year-old Anton Gerzenberg returns to the Degollado as guest soloist when the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (OFJ) performs Franz Liszt’s Totentanz and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, No. 1. A rising talent, Anton Gerzenberg was the winner of the Concurso Internacional de Piano Géza Anda in 2021.
