Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) is ready to roll out the red carpet for the opening of the community theater’s 48th season on Saturday, September 29.
The season opener, “Quartet,” written by Ronald Harwood and directed by Ann Swiston, is a poignant perspective on aging, love and personal strength.Unexpectedly brought together in a retirement home for opera singers and musicians, four engaging characters who once sang together in “Rigoletto” learn to face old hurts and the idiosyncrasies brought on by age and by rekindling the creative fires that defines who they really are.
The cast features Kathleen Carlson as “Cissy Robson,” Roger Larson as “Reginald Paget,” David McIntosh as “Wilfred Bond” and Peggy Lord Chilton as “Jean Horton.”
Swinton arrived at Lakeside about four years ago and attended an LLT Summer Workshop. Since then she appeared in “Pajama Game,” assisted the director in LLT’s “Regrets Only” in 2009 and “How the Other Half Loves” in 2011. She has directed two productions at the Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre.
A movie adaptation of “Quartet” (Harwood also wrote the screenplay) debuted last weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie marks two-time Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut at the age of 75. The Hollywood Reporter this week described “Quartet” as “an actors’ film,” in which Hoffman can “flex his muscles and experiences.” He was in good company. The cast featured a catalog of British household acting names: Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon. The film has received generally positive early reviews – being compared to the box office hit “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” – and goes on general release in the United States on January 4, 2013.
Tickets for LLT’s season opener cost 200 pesos and will be sold Thursday and Friday, September 27 and 28, 10 a.m. to noon at the theater box office.
Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. (except for Sunday matinees). Get there early for the best parking. The Angel Patio full service bar opens at 6:30 p.m. The box office opens one hour before curtain.
Lakeside Little Theatre is located on Allen W. Lloyd Drive in San Antonio Tlayacapan on the mountain side of the carretera next to Instituto Loyola.
