Chapala will celebrate International Dance Day with a lively festival scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 6:30 p.m., at La Vela plaza, located at the west end of the waterfront Malecon. Admission is free to the public.

Sponsored by the local government’s department of culture, the event will feature a varied program of different dance genres. Danza Polinesia Alaka’i Kele,  Desperanto Estudio de Baile Studio and Free Style Dance Studio are booked to perform jazz, modern and South Seas style dances.  The municipalty’s Compañia de Danza Folklorica and the Ballet Folklorico del Maestro Carlos Rayo will appear to present regional dances of Mexico.

Instituted in 1982, International Dance Day is observed worldwide on April 29 to commemorate the birthdate of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet. The aim is for people to revel in the universality of an art form that crosses political, cultural and ethnic barriers.
