Newcomers sweep CASA awards

Nancy and Michael Robbins presented the March 10 program for the members of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA).

The speakers, owners of Jasmine’s Classic Indi Food and Music in Ajijic, were a perfect match for one of the month’s competition categories, Indian Main Dishes.

Main Dish winners were first place: Marina Benz, Murg Makhani; second place: Barb Van Beers, Spicy Chicken Coconut Curry; third place: Margaret Ancira, Masala Raan on the Barbie. Monica Molloy won the nod for the best presentation among the many main dish entries.

In the second category, Mousse or Pudding, there was a tie for first place between Gail Early’s Piña Colada Pudding with Pineapple Mango Jam and Monique Grossman’s  Layered Chocolate Mousse. The two also tied in the contest for the best presentation among the desserts. Other ranking in the dessert category competition included second place: Ginger Perkins, Fresh Lemon Mousse with Blueberry Coulis; third place: Collette Clavadetscher, Mousse au Chocolat.

The always eagerly awaited People’s Choice awards went to Marina Benz, who took first place in the Indian main dishes and Monique Grossman, one of the dessert first place winners.

Proof that it doesn’t require a great deal of experience to win the top prizes at CASA is a look at this month’s results. Maina Benz, Barb Van Beers, Gail Early, Monique Grossman and Collette Clavadetscher are all new members.
