Dance couple to entwine Mexican music, flamenco in ‘experimental’ show

A celebration of cultures, Flamenco Son Jarocho, is set to perform on two third-floor stages in Plaza Bugambilias on Monday, March 2, beginning 6 p.m. Produced by Rodrigo Robles and Leonor Zertuche, this unusual paring compares and combines traditional flamenco, the intense guitar and staccato dance of Spain with jarocho, the sensually exotic music and rhythm of Veracruz.

“This show gives us the opportunity to compare folk cultures as we combine the languages and movements of Spain and the Caribbean coast of Mexico,” says Zertuche, an Ajijic flamenco dancer and instructor. “We have eight superior musicians and four dancers working together to demonstrate the differences of these traditions. Then we show how we can blend the dance and the music together. This is Mexican music and flamenco presented together as if it is experimental theater.”

Son de Maguey, the six-member group, will mingle their emotion-charged rhythmic repertoire with the Spanish acoustic guitar of Guadalajara’s Fernando Martinez and the percussion created in the dance by Zertuche and her partner, Robles, also from Guadalajara and returning from Europe where he studied six years in Spain and works in two dance companies in France.

Wine and tapas will be served by Ninette at the performance. Tickets for this cultural event are 200 pesos and available at Cinemas del Lago or at Jardin de Ninette.
