Efren González dabbles in deathly themes

Ajijic artist Efren González has been working at a frantic pace to wrap up his latest creative projects and prepare for a series of special events in the first two weeks of November.

He is moving forward on the Muro de Muertos, the memorial wall he is installing on the exterior of the primary school located across the street from the San Andrés Church in Ajijic. It is a work in progress that will be inaugurated Wednesday, November 2, 7 p.m., in conjunction with the town’s Day of the Dead festivities.  Bring gas lighters or matches to lend a hand in lighting of vigil candles that will illuminate dozens of ceramic skulls for the occasion.

González is also gearing up for another of his convivial art auctions, with an enticing selection of works going on the block Friday, November 4, from 4 p.m., outside the Centro Cultural Ajijic on the north side of the plaza.  Proceeds will help fund the continuation of the skull mural.

On Saturday, November 12, 6 p.m., González opens his gallery for a public preview of his latest project: a huge ceramic mural commissioned by La Calaca, an upscale restaurant located in the Coyoacan neighborhood of Mexico City. The new work is comprised of 300 separate pieces to be incorporated in the 4.8- by 2.6-meter mural reflecting Dia de Muertos themes. The components are now tied together onto a wood backdrop, drying out to be fired in the artist’s hand-built kiln.
