Lake Chapala Chorale sings in the holiday spirit

Grab onto the spirit of the season this December by catching “Christmas, Ain’t That Good News!” at several venues around town.

This holiday concert is brought to Lakeside as a gift from the brand-new, 17-voice Lake Chapala Chorale, directed by Cindy Paul, a longtime Lakeside resident.

Patrons will recognize many of the nostalgic tunes of the season and come away uplifted by some of the most beautiful music ever composed, from early medieval songs such as “O Come Emmanuel” to Bach’s otherworldly “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” to Shubert’s famous “Ave Maria” and the title gospel number, “Ain’t That Good News!”

The schedule is as follows:

Saturday, December 3, 4 p.m. at the Lakeside Little Chapel: Coming full circle, the Chorale’s one-hour debut is located in the church where Bonnie Wolff started the first big expat choir some 25 years ago, the Lakeside Ecumenical Choir. We’ve come full circle!

Thursday, December 8, 7 p.m. at the old Chapala Train Station: Fabulous acoustics and atmosphere will allow these voices to shine.

Saturday, December 10, 4 p.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church: A complete one-hour concert in this beautiful new church.

Tuesday, December 13, 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church: This is an abbreviated version of the hour-long concert. The Chorale will provide 20 minutes of Christmas a cappella music as part of the church’s special music program.

Sunday, December 18, 5 p.m. at The Latter Day Saints Chapel in Riberas del Pilar: The complete concert offering.

Friday, December 23, 7:30 p.m. at La Bodega Restaurant: The first half consists of a cappella music, and the second half will feature audience sing-alongs of famous carols.
