Ajijic fundraiser for Ballet Jalisco

Lakeside Friends of the Ballet de Jalisco – the state’s only professional ballet company – are hosting a special fundraiser for the group Saturday, January 28, noon-3 p.m. at the home of Suzanne Salimbene, Calle Independencia 49 (corner of Cinco de Febrero) in Ajijic.

This is your chance to meet the company’s dancers, who perform to sold-out audiences at the Degollado Theater and on tour. Proceeds from the 350-peso entrance fee, including tasty snacks and wine, all go directly to the dance troupe via the director of the ballet to purchase toe shoes.

You’ll see how a dancer breaks in a new pair of toe shoes and learn just why they wear out so fast. A professional ballet dancer can go through a pair of these specialized shoes each week, and they cost up to 2,000 pesos a pair.

The event will include a raffle and silent auction – items include performance and rehearsal tickets and a special lunch in Guadalajara with the creators of a new ballet that will have its world premier at the Degollado later this season.
