A classic American musical hits the boards

Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production, “Chicago The Musical,” will run February 17-March 3. The production features a cast of 20 performers, including actors, singers and dancers.

Directed by Barbara Clippinger, choreographed by Alexis Hoff with music directed by Patteye Simpson, the musical is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, with a script adaptation by David Thompson. The book is by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander, and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It was a nominee for the Best Musical, Best book of a Musical and Best Original Score at the 1975 Tony Awards and won the 1997 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.

In roaring twenties Chicago, chorine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap ... until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal. This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.

Show tickets will be on sale at LLT’s box office during the usual hours. Curtain is 7:30 p.m. evenings, 3 p.m. for Sunday matinee.
