“Time Stands Still,” Lakeside Little Theatre’s next production, is a poignant contemporary drama written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies.
It centers on Sarah, who has returned from covering the Iraq war after being injured by a roadside bomb, and her boyfriend James, who is swamped by guilt after leaving Sarah alone in Iraq. Their friend Richard, a photo editor, introduces them to his new, much younger girlfriend Mandy. The play focuses on their relationships and Sarah and James’ prospects for a more conventional life.
Directed by David Goldman and featuring Don Beaudreault, Johanna Labadie, Greg Custer and Carolyn Cothran, “Time Stands Still” runs November 3-12 at Lakeside Little Theatre. Evenings, the curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. and the first Saturday and both Sunday matinees begin 3 p.m.

An exhibit of paintings will be up at the Salon Camachines in the Hotel Real de Chapala Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5 to benefit the Grupo Ayuda a Nuestros Abuelos de Ajijic (Help for our grandparents of Ajijic).

The Day of the Dead festivities continue with an exhibition of catrinas and live jazz music by Lola LA Tequiera and sus Naguales on the Andador Axixic, Saturday, November 4, beginning 6 p.m.

Death every day
Sunday, November 5, the Centro Cultural Ajijic presents “Muerte de Todos Los Dias” by Carlos Orona, a timely homage to death.
This production features a cast of historical characters taken from Diego Rivera’s famous mural “Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Almeda Central Park,” including La Catrina, Frida Kahlo, Diego, and various others.
The curtain rises at 6 p.m. Tickets are 80 pesos in advance and 100 pesos at the door. Come and support community theater and learn some Spanish.
New World Song Cycle
Guadalajara lyric tenor Ricardo Calderon will sing old and new American songs – accompanied on the piano by Timothy Welch – on Thursday, November 9, 7 p.m. as part of Viva la Musica’s New World Song Cycle series.
Calderon has sung in operas and as a concert soloist throughout Mexico, and more recently in the United States. He will present a program of songs by U.S. composers Stephen Foster (“Beautiful Dreamer”), Samuel Barber (“Sure on This Shining Night”), Henry Mancini (“Moon River”) and Leonard Bernstein (“Maria” from “West Side Story”).
After the intermission, Calderon will be joined by Canadian soprano Judy Roberts who will sing “What Good Would the Moon Be” and “Lonely House” from “Street Scene” by Kurt Weill.
The concert is being held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar. Tickets, 300 pesos for adults and 50 pesos for students, are available at Mia’s Boutique, Diane Pearl and the LCS ticket booth on Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to noon.
LLT auditions
Director Paul Kloegman is looking for three women for the Lakeside Little Theatre production of “Agnes of God” to be staged January 12-21, 2018. Auditions are Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, 9:30 a.m. at the theater.

“Fiddler on the Roof” auditions at LLT are on Friday and Saturday, November 17 are 18, 9:30 a.m. The play is directed by Dave McIntosh, music direction by Ann Swiston and choreography by Flemming Halby. The directors are looking for at least ten males and ten females of all ages, including teens. Vera Lynn tribute
Cindy Paul will perform “We’ll Meet Again,” a tribute to Vera Lynn, at an event sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion at La Casa del Musico, La Paz 59 in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Friday and Saturday, November 17 and 18, 7-9 p.m.
Lynn is an English singer whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during World War II. In 2009, at the age of 92, she became the oldest living artist to top the UK Albums Chart, with “We’ll Meet Again: The Very Best of Vera Lynn.” She released the album “Vera Lynn 100” earlier this year to commemorate her centennial year, and it was a number three hit, making her the oldest recording artist in the world and first centenarian performer to have an album in the charts.

Bravo Theatre
“Trying,” by Canadian playwright Joanna Glass is the next production of Bravo Theatre.
Directed by Bernadette Jones, with Roger Larson and Allison Plamondon, “Trying” is based on Glass’s experience during 1967-1968 when she worked for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington, D.C. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General of the United States under Franklin Roosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him Chief Judge of the American Military Tribunal at Nuremberg. The play is about a young Canadian girl and an old Philadelphia aristocrat “trying” to understand each other in Biddle’s final year of his life.
