Art exhibition in celebration of color

Janice Kimball and Francisco Urzua, weavers who create their wall art in collaboration, have joined with painter Geraldine Classen for The Penthouse Gallery’s annual fall exhibition and event, “Fantasma, A Celebration of Color,” opening Friday, October 22, 2 to 5 p.m.

pg17bClassen’s paintings are an explosion of color in surreal -scapes on raw canvas. Her method of becoming part of a scene while she does the initial drawing allows her to create dream scenes that are expansive, yet intimately revealing.

Using a colorful menagerie of materials, wool, synthetic, metallic, cotton and linen intermixed, Kimball and Urzua  weave their textile “paintings” from Janice’s  drawings. Known for their pre-hispanic inspired panels, their eclectic weaving collection reflects Kimball’s formal background as a painter in Chicago.

In going all-out to make the event memorable, the gallery is having a free drawing. Prizes will include a small painting by Classen and two books by Janice Kimball: “The Joy Of Art,” a self-help book for the beginning to advanced artist, and “Swoboda’s Hidden Women,” a four generational memoir of exploited women.

The Penthouse Gallery (soon to be renamed Kimball and Urzua Gallery) is in West Ajijic, east of Rio Bravo, near Yves Restaurant. Appetizers and wine will be served. Masks are required in the exhibition areas and digital temperatures will be taken at the door.
