The Ajijic Jewish Film Festival returns

After a one-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, the Ajijic Jewish Film Festival returns on Sunday, January 9, continuing for eight successive Sundays with an outstanding line-up of diverse films, along with strict Covid-19 safety measures.

pg16Working together with the management of CineMagic, the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation, which organizes the event, has instituted additional safety measures on top of what the movie theater already has in place. Each sala has an independent air circulation system on the roof, social distancing and fully vaccinated staff. Capacity has been reduced to 75 percent and all attendees must show proof of full vaccination and wear face masks at all times.

For the first time, advanced season tickets with reserved seating are on sale. Festival Chairperson Michael Sullivan says this will minimize queuing and crowds in the lobby before a performance, and eliminate the need for season ticket holders to arrive early in order to snare prime seating. Advance ticket sales have been brisk, he reports.

This year’s program boasts a line-up of critically acclaimed international films, including biopics, dramas and comedies. Many are on the lighter side, intended to inform and lift spirits at a time when life has been upended and the ordinary act of sitting in a darkened movie theater might bring back some sense of normalcy.
