Peruvian weaver returns to Ajijic, his ‘magical town’

Internationally acclaimed weaver Constantino Laura, who has returned to show his latest work at the Galeria Sol y Luna in Ajijic, has been recognized by the Peruvian government as an “amauta,” a major honor for distinguished citizens in that nation.

pg12aWikipedia describes an amauta as “a master or wise one … a title for teachers in the Inca empire, especially of children of the nobility,” while the Royal Spanish Academy Dictionary’s definition is “an elderly and experienced person who, in Indian communities, has moral authority and certain powers of government.”

Since initially showing in Ajijic in 2019, Laura’s status as an international maestro has grown significantly.

Last year, he was invited to participate in a group exhibition of artists from Latin America and the Caribbean at the Sorbonne in Paris. “It was an exhibit to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Moliere’s birth and the influence of his thought on Latin American culture,” he says.
