“The World Goes Round” opened to a receptive crowd on September 27 at Lakeside Little Theatre.
The show is a musical review that presents the music of the prolific composer/lyricist team of John Kander and Fred Ebb. The pair is perhaps best known for their musicals “Caberet” and “Chicago,” but they also wrote the song “New York, New York” and were long-term collaborators of Liza Minnelli. Theater-goers will recognize many of the songs in this production, and some may be unfamiliar. While the show covers a vast emotional range, you will definitely leave the theater in an upbeat mood. As Kander and Ebb would say, “… sometimes you’re happy, sometimes you’re sad, but the world goes round.”
LLT’s high-energy production features a fine cast of singers (Janeene Williams, Kristine Leigh, Margaret Stricklett, Brian Mathers, and Patrick Trotter). Williams is a newcomer to LLT and hopefully we will hear her strong, beautiful voice on stage again soon. Stricklett, who comes to LLT from a career in opera, is wonderful as well. The two of them do a great job with the stirring, heartfelt numbers. Leigh is an LLT veteran who shines in the sassy, sexy songs, such as “Arthur in the Afternoon.” Dancer Lucio Mendez shows the audience why the titular “Arthur” is so popular!
