Grandeur of Strauss’ ‘Arabella’ screens at LLT

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) hosts the third of its eight-production New York Met opera season, Richard Strauss’ acclaimed “Arabella,” Monday, December 22, 4 p.m.

15aThe opera follows the travails of an impoverished clergyman’s daughter, Arabella Tallant, who impulsively claims to be a wealthy heiress to a jaded bachelor. The ensuing adventures and twists have beguiled audiences since the opera premiered in 1933.

Said the Met: “The opera’s intimate atmosphere and focus on emotional interiority make it decidedly cinematic and modern. Its grand scale, iconic leading lady, and sweeping romance are hallmarks of grand opera.”

“Arabella” speaks “less of vanished manners than of an enduring longing for sincerity, a yearning that, like the fragile negotiation between desire and restraint, persists in every age,” noted a review on Seenandheard.com.

James Karas Reviews gushed about the opulent production: “… a delight to the ear, the eye and everything that we hope to find in an opera.”

LLT projects “Arabella” in the McIntosh Auditorium with its state-of-the-art projection, screen and sound system – better than front-row seats at a fraction of the cost. The opera is sung in German and presented with English subtitles.

Tickets, 350 pesos, are available at lakesidelittletheatre.com/tickets or at the box office before the performances.
