Ribera Arts Review – August 27, 2011

Getting naked

The Naked Stage, Ajijic’s minimalist play-reading group, presents  “Death Trap” by Ira Levin on Friday, August 26; Saturday, August 27 and Sunday, August  28, 4 p.m. on each day, at Plaza de la Ribera (Formerly Sol y Luna), located on Calle Rio Bravo in west Ajijic.

Directed by Russell Mack, this Tony-nominated comedy-thriller takes a look at all the murder, thriller and horror stories to be found, then twists and rearranges the plots again and again. It’s mind-blowing but fun and funny at the same time.

In the cast are Ken Yakiwchuk, Jayme Littlejohn, Arlene Pace, Fred Koesling and Roger Larson.

Reservations are a must. Call Ann Pinkerton at 766-5986 for reservations or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The donation is 80 pesos. The play is not appropriate for children.

Olivares specializes in taking images of breathtaking agave landscapes and is a passionate photographer of the tequila-making process.

“La Tierra del Tequila” will be mounted until October 25.  For more information call Maria Di Paola at (376) 766-1010.

Collums foundation

A group of friends of late author Jim Collums will hold public readings of some of his work to raise funds for the newly formed Jim Collums Education Fund.

The event is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31, 4-6 p.m. on the back patio of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). Mel Goldberg, Fred Koesling, Jim Tipton and Liz White will read some of Collums’ finest words.

Show up and enjoy the cash bar (wine, beer and soft drinks). Admission is free but expect the hat to be passed around. All money raised for the educational fund will be distributed by the LCS Student Aid Programs.

Potted

Master potter Frank Howell is starting up a six-week course in pottery-making beginning Monday, September 12. He’ll be teaching hand building, wheel throwing and high-fire stoneware. Classes are small with lots of individual attention. Call him at (376) 765-6382.

Helping out

Don’t miss the ongoing garage sale to help fund photographer Xill Fessenden’s trip north to display her spectacular work at Fotoseptiembre in San Antonio, Texas.

The sale will run from August 27 though September 6, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at her digs at Calle Aldama 3B in Ajijic. Fessenden will be selling off folk art, tools, antiques, textiles, ceiling fans and a bunch of other neat stuff at bargain prices. To get to the sale, turn downhill on the street across the highway from Ajijic’s Pemex gasoline station. That’s Aldama. Just head downhill.

For the record

There seems to have been a little mix-up about the winners in the August competition of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA). Just so you know – in Category B, the three-ingredient dessert challenge, there was a tie for first place between Joan Lowry and Ginger Perkins. Second place went to Pam Ladd and the third place went to Alexandra Gordon.{/access}

The Bing

Congratulations to Ginger Perkins for winning CASA’s prestigious BING award. To earn a BING, a member must have three first-place wins in the same calendar year. The award was instituted in 1987 in honor of Bing Horn, the wife of former U.S. consul general and entrepreneur Adolph Horn, who founded the Bing ice cream company in Mexico.

Perkins is relatively new to Lakeside, having moved here from St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2010. The three recipes that won her the BING award were Lemon Bars Deluxe, Orzo with Roasted Vegetables and Berry Kiwi Tart with Almond Crust.

Anyone interested in joining CASA should contact Mary Ann Waite at (376) 766-1436 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
