Artists gather

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, May 7, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant. The coffee is on at 9:30 a.m.

Get there early and schmooze with your artist buddies or make new friends at this gathering of local artists. ASA meets each month to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area.

Janey Marquez will be the speaker at the May meeting, discussing various aspects of semi precious stones. All are welcome.

Musical Odyssey

Enjoy the recital “Object of Desire, a Musical Odyssey” on Sunday, May 20, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.

This fund-raising event is to help the Mexican choristers of Los Cantantes del Lago participate in the summer tour to British Columbia.

Getting naked

The Naked Stage minimalist readers’ theater presents “Legends” at the Naked Stage Theater (Rio Bravo 10, west Ajijic) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 25, 26 and 27, 4 p.m.

Written by James Kirkwood and directed by Barbara Clippinger, “Legends” is about rival aging actresses and penned for Broadway icons Mary Martin and Carol Channing. They took the comedy on the road for two years, hoping to turn it into a Broadway smash. That never happened. More recently, Linda Evans and Joan Collins toured part of Canada and the United States in the play for 30 weeks.

The Naked Stage edition will star local theater veterans Jeritza McCarter and Betty Lloyd Robinson, along with Tina Jones.

About food

The April meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) featured a competition of Asian/Oriental Dish in Category A and Fruit Desserts for Category B. The speaker was Peter Palmer, owner of “Go” restaurant in Ajijic. Palmer spoke about the many intricacies of and the varied types of Asian cuisine. Palmer spent many years living in Asia, so the program was extremely interesting and educational. The judges were Norma King, Daphne Peerless and Mike Campo.

First Place in Category A was awarded to Monica Molloy for her Lobster, Crab and Shrimp Rolls with Mango, Pineapple and Peanut Salsa. Wayne Palfrey took the second slot for his Lemon Chicken and Nancy Traill took the third place award for her Indonesian Beef Rendong.

Winners in Category B were Hazel Tash in first place for her Mango Mascarpone Ginger Flan, Mary Ann Waite in second place for her Kumquat Blueberry Tart and Karen Blue in third place for her Summer Pavlova. The People’s Choice awards went to Beverly Denton for her Burmese Pork Stew with pickled Eggs and to Mary Ann Wait for her winning entry.

Local gigs

Besides at his appearances in Guadalajara, local fans of Daniel Cordero can enjoy his special brand of entertainment at several Lakeside venues.

He appears every Friday, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Los Telares Restaurant at Morelos 6 (extension of Colon). A bonus is that Cordero plays during the two-for-one drink special.

Saturdays, Cordero plays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hacienda Don Emiliano, the new campestre restaurant on the lake side of the highway between Santa Cruz and Vista del Lago.

Sundays, find Cordero on the Batur Lake Cruise, departing at 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. from the east end of the Chapala malecon. The cruises last about two and a half hours.

Movies

Democrats Abroad will launch its new movie series with “Waiting for Superman,” a film about education in the United States. Cinema del Lago at Plaza Bugambilias will show the movie Sunday, May 13, 3 p.m. The admission is 50 pesos.

The regular Democrats Abroad meeting scheduled for May 14 will not be held in view of many other activities, including the International DA convention on the weekend of May 17, 18 and 19 in Puerto Vallarta.
