Elections

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, June 4, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (coffee is on at 9:30 a.m.).

Elections will be held for president and secretary for the next two years. Those voting must be paid-up ASA members.

Telling tales

Storytellers will be back on stage in the gazebo of the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) on Tuesday, June 12, 4 p.m.

The theme of this program is “Erotica!” It’s being billed as a rousing reading of original amatory tales by Lakeside’s best writers and readers.

Participating in the Storytellers program will be Susan Miller, Jonny Kottler, Larry Reeves, Liz White, Joan Davis, Patricia Hemingway, Jim Tipton and Arden Murphy.

Admission is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Funds raised are earmarked for the Jim Collums Education Fund.

Arrive early. The bar opens at 3:30 p.m.

Old art

Folks organizing this year’s Feria Maestros del Arte (in November) will have a folk art fundraising table at the upcoming Lake Chapala Society CAN/AM celebration on July 2.

They will be selling pre-owned and pre-loved Mexican folk art to raise money to help the artists with their transportation costs.

Participating artists and artisans do not pay a fee to take part in the Feria. Neither do they pay a commission on sales. However, unless outside funding is obtained, they must dig into their own pockets to get themselves to and from the event.

This cost is often prohibitive (a round-trip bus fare from Chiapas is about 400 dollars) and often a reason for artists not to participate.

If you have any Mexican folk art that you are ready to part with, contact Bridget Andrews at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If you are passionate about Mexican folk art, now is the time to “pay it forward.”

The auction

Artist Efren Gonzalez was thrilled that so many folks braved a rainy day on Saturday, May 26 to raise money for the continued renovation of the Ajijic Plaza.

The auction bidding was brisk, with Gonzalez keeping up the pace with his patter and jokes to a relaxed audience sufficiently plied with plentiful free drinks and tasty snacks.

The most expensive piece sold was a framed mosaic by plaza project designer Federico Enciso that went for 5,000 pesos. Art created by the kids in Gonzalez’s daily art project were also hot items.

Gonzalez made a point of thanking everyone who turned out despite the climate of fear gripping the community, stressing that everyone must carry on with their lives as usual.

The total amount garnered toward the plaza renovation project was 16,000 pesos. Another event is already being planned.

Meanwhile, Encisco was working away on the last of the four outer sunburst patterns being laid on the plaza’s floor. The project still has a long way to go. Because so much of it can only be done with hand-cut pieces, progress is slow.

Project patronage is welcomed. Donations may be deposited in Bancomer account #2909134743, or contact finance committee chairperson Velia Ramos by cell phone at 33-13-13-87-58 to arrange for pick-up.

Art Room

Showstopper #4

Los Cantantes del Lago reprises their “Showstoppers” concert on Sunday, June 17, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.

The event is another fundraiser to help the young Mexican singers in choir with their travel expenses on the summer tour to the Kathaumixw Choral Festival in Powell River, B.C.

This version of the concert will have some additional fun performances and a new emcee – Betty Lloyd Robinson. With Tim Welch at the piano and lots of everyone’s favorite tunes and singers, you don’t want to miss this.

Tickets are 180 pesos and on sale now at Diane Pearl Colecciones and Mia’s Boutique or by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can arrive early, put a “reserved” sign on your preferred seat and adjourn to the garden for a refreshing drink before the concert.
