Art Room

The Beat Colors Art Room, a new Lakeside art gallery located upstairs at Plaza Bugambilias, celebrates its grand opening on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16.

A cocktail party beginning 3 p.m. on June 15 will be embellished with live jazz and free wine for the first 100 guests. Bodega Live Sounds perform at 9 p.m.

A martini party on June 16, from 3 p.m., offers a two-for-one deal and a DJ. Also enjoy a fashion show from 9 p.m.

Opening hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. on both days.

The gallery features works by Itzcoatl, Luz Preciado, Milo Needles, Xilonxochitl, Yaser Carillo, Ricardo Ibarra and Karitina Ramos. For more information check out www.beatcolors.tk.

Railroad exhibit

An exhibition of articles used during the heyday of Mexico’s railroads opens Saturday, June 9, 6 p.m. at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center (old railroad station) in Chapala.  Free admission.

Choir

A choir from the University of Puerto Rico presents an excellent program of music from that country on Wednesday, June 20, beginning 7 p.m. at the Gonzalez Gallo Cultural Center in Chapala. Free admission.

Plaza auction

Once again, Efren Gonzalez will take up the hammer for an auction of works by local artists. The date is Friday, June 22, 3:30 p.m. on the Ajijic plaza.

Watercolors, oil paintings, pastel paintings and photography will be up for bid, with the proceeds of the event going toward the continued renovation of the plaza. Organizers will have tents to protect customers from the sun or rain, and refreshing drinks will be offered. Bring money so you can take advantage of the great bargains!

VIVA bus trips

VIVA la Musica! has planned bus trips to Guadalajara for various concerts in the summer season of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO). All the concerts take place in the elegant Teatro Degollado in the historic center.

The first trip on Friday, June 22 departs at 4:30 p.m. for a restaurant meal prior to the 8:30 p.m. concert.  Alondra de la Parra will be conducting (as she will all concerts on this schedule), accompanied by invited U.S. violinist Chad Hoopes. The program includes Moncayo’s “Sinfonieta,” Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3.”

On Sunday, July 1 the bus leaves lakeside at 10:30 a.m. Departure on Friday, July 6 will be  at 4:30 p.m.  Again, concert-goers will stop at a restaurant for an evening meal en route. The bus for the Sunday, July 15 departs at 10:30 a.m. (See JPO schedule on page 21.)

Photography

Jill Flyer will again be teaching her popular photography class, starting on Tuesday, July 10, 3 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center on the town’s principal plaza.

This class is for people who have a camera and want to learn more about them and how to take creative and beautifully composed images.

Topics for the class include “A History of Photography,” “Composition and Lighting,” “How a Camera Works,” and “Understanding Movement, Texture and Depth of Field.” The class will also take mini field trips to various areas in Ajijic to stimulate creativity.

Flyer is a professional photographer who has won many awards and exhibited in major galleries in the United States and Mexico.

Showstopper #4

Los Cantantes del Lago reprise their “Showstoppers” concert on Sunday, June 17, 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Riberas del Pilar.

The event is another fundraiser to help the young Mexican singers in the choir with their travel expenses on the summer tour to the Kathaumixw Choral Festival in Powell River, B.C.

This version of the concert will have some additional fun performances and a new emcee – Betty Lloyd Robinson.
