Ribera Arts Review - August 18, 2012

New group

A new art/artisan group is forming at Lakeside. Called Lakeside Artisan Association, the group is looking for members who are skilled at their trades or handicrafts and looking to aid those members in marketing their goods. Applications will be screened by the board of directors, Charles Freeland, Laura Dunaway, Mario and Marina Maurtua, Barbara Milagros and Tony Passorello.

The range of goods offered includes artisan foods, original artworks, wearables and gifts, though because of the product exclusivity clause, acceptance will be on a “first come — first served” basis. Members will be guaranteed sales space at the new Artisan Market (to be launched in September), market advertising and presence on the association website with an association email address.

To become a member, you must produce your own food product, art or craft and live in the Lakeside or surrounding areas. One member only will be selected in each category based upon market appeal.

The cost to members is 1,125 pesos per quarter, two semi-annual installments of 2,125 pesos or one annual payment of 4,050 pesos. To receive your application form, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

MAS website

Lots of folks are enjoying the new Music Appreciation Society website at www.masmusica.com. The website is up to date and you can listen to sound bites from future events. It also gives visitors the opportunity to add their email address to subscribe to MAS informational emails. The new MAS emailing list service automatically removes defunct addresses and gives the receiver the option to be removed from future emails. MAS is still working on electronic ticket sales and donations and will have it worked out soon.

MAS is still holding ticket sales at the Lake Chapala Society weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (even in the rain) through August 24 and on the Callejon Guadalupe Victoria on the Ajijic Plaza on Sundays, August 19 and August 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Center seating is priced at 1,300 pesos and side seating at 1,100 pesos for the four scheduled events in the 2012-2013 season.

The space will also be filled with hand-loomed textiles, hand-embroidered clothing, all kinds of decorative items for the home and garden and pre-Columbian reproductions. Sing

It’s the Fourth Sunday Sing coming up on August 26 at 5 p.m. at Alicia’s Assisted Living Care, Paseo del Lago 7 in La Floresta,

Ajijic. All of you faithful, joyful singers, who like to sing the old gospel songs or hymns that everyone knows by heart or that can be found in one of the church hymnals, are welcome. There’s no official program—it’s all by request. Just show up and have a singing good time. Belva Velazquez will be there on keyboard.

Feria website

Those of you interested in the artists and artisans on board for the 11th Feria Maestros del Arte coming up in November should check out the website at www.mesicoartshow.com. It provides information on all aspects of the fair. Each artist has his or her own webpage allowing you to read about his or her and see examples of the work produced before you visit the fair.

An event like Feria Maestros del Arte requires lots of helping hands. In fact, hundreds of volunteers work together to make it happen. The fair still needs people to help with promotions, admissions, entertainment, information, the raffle, decorating and transportation. Contact volunteer coordinator Lynda Deringer at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or show up at the volunteer general meeting on Monday, August 27, 2 p.m. at Plaza de la Ribera, Rio Bravo 10 in West Ajijic.

Naked stage

Next up for the readers’ minimalist theater, The Naked Stage, at Rio Bravo 10A in Ajijic is “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” by Steve Martin, directed by Russell Mack on the boards August 24, 25 and 26 at 4 p.m.

The play takes place at the Lapin Agile Café, a bar in Paris, where Freddy is a bartender. First, a 24-year-old Einstein walks in and lays out his, as yet unpublished special theory of relativity while Picasso salutes his cubist manifesto. It’s every bit as funny as anyone would expect Steve Martin to come up with…but it’s not for kids.

The cast includes Zane Pumiglia, Graham Miller, Patteye Simpson, Ken Yakiwchuck, Candace Luciano, Tony Wilshere, Neal Checkoway, Jim Donnelly and Chris Lane.
The bar opens at 3:30 p.m. and the box office at 3:15 p.m. Reservations for the play are a must. Contact Ann Pinkerton at 766-5986 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The donation is 80 pesos.
