Art fair

Feria Maestros del Arte board members, Diana Ayala and Marianne Carlson, announced and presented the winners of the recent Feria-sponsored children’s art contest held this past month during the Saturday morning art classes at the Lake Chapala Society.

Judges were Bridget Andrews, Jose Luis Cortez Hernandez and Jose Manuel Robles, who reviewed more than 50 entrees. The first place winner was Jose Maria Reyes Cornejo, second place went to Rosario Lopez Garcia and the third place winner is Giselle Guadalupe Miramontes. Those with honorable mentions were Fatima Guadalupe Lopez Guzman, Renata Carolina Medina Cruz, Oscar Orlando Ibarra Lopez, Jose Bruno Mariscal Ortiz and Sandra Medina Castellanos.

The purpose of the contest was to educate and remind the kids at Lakeside about their heritage and the importance of Mexican folk art.

The Feria’s mission is to preserve and promote Mexican indigenous and folk art. In addition to their awards, the winners will also exhibit and sell their works at the upcoming Feria Maestros del Arte, to be held November 15, 17 and 18 at Plaza de la Ribera in Ajijic.

September photos

The annual Ajijic collective photo exhibit held in conjunction with Mexico’s “Fotoseptiembre” opens at the Ajijic Cultural Center on Saturday, September 1, with a reception at 6 p.m.

The stunning display will feature works by Citlalli Morales, Jill Flyer, Julia Martinez, Maria Di Paola, Nelda Hinajosa, Jaime Barbiery, Mayra Martinez, Hugo Valladolid, Rafael Montano, Veronica Cardoso and others.

The exhibition will remain in place throughout September. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Book signing

Maria Di Paola will be on hand to sign copies of her new book, “Reflections on Photography, notes and essays on painting with light” on Saturday, September 1, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hacienda’s Ajijic Steak House. A portion of the funds raised from sales will go to scholarships for certain students at the Terra Nova Institute.

ASA meets

The Ajijic Society of the Arts meets Monday, September 3, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (Calle 16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic).

After a short business meeting, “Benjamine” will offer an introduction to working with metal.  He will cover the skills required for cutting, forming, shaping, folding and texturing metal with cold connections.

ASA is a gathering of local artists and artisans who exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area. All are welcome.

Auction

Efren Gonzalez presides at an art auction featuring works by some of the area’s best-known artists on Friday, September 7, 3:30 p.m. on the north side of Ajijic’s principal plaza.

Oil paintings, watercolors and photographs will be up for grabs. There will be snacks and drinks too.

Proceeds will aid needy families in the area. Turn up and get ready to bid!

Theater tickets

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) season tickets will be on sale at the theater on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Season tickets cost 1,000 pesos and include admission to all six shows, the LLT kick-off party on September 20 and LLT membership.

Competitive food

The August meeting of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) featured Hot/Cold Soups for Category A and Pies and Cakes for Category B.

Mario Wille and his wife, Marina, gave a presentation on how they use the freshest and best ingredients when producing their coconut and caramel flan that they sell at local markets.

The judges for the CASA competition were Alexander Becker, Camille Boeckmans and Ginger Perkins.

The first place in Category A was awarded to Nancy Traill for her Tom Kha Gai-Thai Coconut Shrimp Soup. Second place went to Alexandra Gordon for her Ukranian Borscht. Third place went to Sally Myers for her Summer Evening Soup.

Winners in Category B were Roberta Hilleman in first place for her Pear and Almond Pie, Anita Caldwell in second place for her Brownie Chocolate Cream Cake and third place went to Evelyn Cronin for her Bananas Foster.

People’s Choice awards went to Annie Green in Category A for the Tom Ka Gai-Thai Coconut Shrimp soup and to Marti Hurley in Category B for the Pignolia Nut Pie.

Big show

Artist Efren Gonzalez is organizing an Ajijic street art festival for October 13 and 14, to be held on Calle Marcos Castellanos between Constitucion and Parroquia.
Artists who wish to participate will pay a 200-peso entry fee that will be used for advertising and 15 percent of sales. Categories to be accepted are painting, sculpture, photography, etching and ceramics. The event will include performances by dance and musical groups and aims to promote Ajijic as an art center.
