Tandem

The new show at Galeria Sol Mexicano, featuring the work of artists Brian Pimlott and Kathy Seaboyer, opens Friday, October 19 with a reception from 5-8 p.m.

Both painters work in the abstract. Pimlott’s renderings provide brilliant color and interesting lines, while Seaboyer’s work is harsher and more literal.

Do have a look. The show will stay up until November 7. Galeria Sol Mexicano is located at Colon 13 in Ajijic. Regular hours are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The telephone number is 766-0734.

Sale for the critters

Ken Gosh of the El Gallo Gallery in Ajijic is opening his sale studio to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 12, 13 and 14.

All of the proceeds from purchases in the sale salon and a portion of sales of current works will benefit the Lakeside Spay and Neuter Center, Anita’s Animals and Dr. Pepe Magana’s Feeding Program.

Doors will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

That face

Photographer Jill Flyer opens a solo exhibition, “Fascinating Faces,” at the Ajijic Cultural Center on Saturday, October 20, 6 p.m.

Flyer has been taking photos in the Lake Chapala area for ten years, usually serious studies of nature or people. She has won awards and shown her work in galleries and museums both in Mexico and the United States.

“Fascinating Faces,” however, is not quite so serious. It is a compilation of portraits taken of every day people who were “caught” in the moment with humorous expressions or in whimsical situations. The exhibition is sure to put a smile on your face. Refreshments will be served.

The show will run for two weeks. Anyone with questions about the show should contact Flyer at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Book signing

Longtime Ajijic resident Gudrun Jones presents her book, “The Dream is over, the Nightmare Begins,” on Sunday, October 14, 2-6 p.m. at Paseo de Colina 27 in upper La Floresta.

The World War II drama is a fictionalized version of Jones’ mother’s life in Germany. A portion of proceeds from the sale of the book will benefit the Lakeside Spay and Neuter Center.

Art festival

The Marcos Castellanos Street Art Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Calle Marcos Castellanos between Constitucion and Parroquia in Ajijic. Nearly 60 artists, both Mexican and foreign, will participate.

The show will feature paintings, photographs, sculptures, engraving and ceramics. Many of the artists will be working on site from noon to 2 p.m.

Several authors will be on hand to sign books, and the kids who are in Efren Gonzalez’s art program will sell their works.

Troupes will present regional folk dances and pre-Hispanic dances. Traditional Mexican food and drink will be available.

Admission is 10 pesos (kids admitted free). Be there and celebrate Ajijic’s amazing artistic tradition.

Naked Stage

The Naked Stage Reader’s Theatre presents “Other Desert Cities” by Jon Robin Baitz on October 26, 27 and 28, 4 p.m.

Directed by Betty Lloyd Robinson, the play will be staged at the Naked Stage Theatre (Rio Bravo 10-A, west Ajijic). Don Chaloner, Jertiza McCarter, Kevin O’Byrne, Day Dobbert and Peter Luciano form the cast.

“Other Desert Cities” opened on Broadway at the Booth Theatre in October 2011 and ran for 261 performances. It was the winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play.

Singing

The second season of the popular weekly sing-along will resume Monday, November 5, 2-3 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

The main purpose of the sing-along is to give the brain a one hour workout by energizing its parts that activate memory, rhythm, speech, melody, pitch and emotion.

The songs are mostly from the 1950s and 60s, from the “Sound of Music” to “Mack the Knife” to “Mister Sandman” and Peter, Paul and Mary’s “Puff the Magic Dragon,” as well as a smattering of classic earlier and later songs.

This is a lighthearted exercise program and all levels of voice and vocal fitness are welcome. It’s free and open to members and non-members of LCS. Questions? Call Antonia Zivot at 766-3359.
