Ribera Arts Review - November 3, 2012

Coming up

The well-known and popular musical “The Fantasticks” opens at the Plaza de la Ribera (formerly Sol y Luna) on Friday, November 23.

The show is directed by Roger Larson, while Timothy G. Ruff Welch and Judy Hendrick are in charge of the music.

Curtain time on November 23 and November 24 is 7:30 p.m. Other show times are: Sunday November 25, 3 p.m.; Friday, November 30, 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 1, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 2, 3 p.m.

The cast includes Eduardo Muñoz-Zuniga, Marie Claire Figadere, Christian Garcia Duran, John Ward, Fred Koesling, Valerie Jones, Roger Larson and Ken Yakiwchuk.

Song & dance in December

“A Taste of Tin Pan Alley” features songs and dances from the “Golden Age of Music” interpreted by some of Lakeside’s most talented performers.

The show runs December 4, 5, and 6, 6 p.m. at Club Exotica (inside El Jardin Restaurant on the Ajijic Plaza). Tickets cost 300 pesos and are available at Diane Pearl Colecciones, Mia’s Boutique and the Lake Chapala Society. The ticket includes dinner and the show.

The dinner will be a gourmet holiday buffet.

All the proceeds will benefit the Tepehua Community Center in Chapala.

Also in December

VIVA la Musica’s Opera Gala is set for Thursday, December 6, 7 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.

The program features tenor Cesar Delgado and soprano Patricia Perez, accompanied by Andres Sarre. They will sing solos and duets from Mozart’s “Don Giovanni,” Cilea’s “L’Arlesiana,” Puccini’s “La Rondina,” “Manon Lescaut” and “La Boheme,” de Falla’s “La Vida Breve,” Sorozabal’s “La Taberna del Puerto” and more, including encores such as “Maria” and “Tonight” from “West Side Story.”

Tickets cost 200 pesos for VIVA members, 300 pesos for non-members and 100 pesos for students. They will be available at the Lake Chapala Society on Thursdays and Fridays, Diane Pearl’s Colecciones and at the door.

Opening this weekend

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) opens its second offering of its 48th season, “I’ll Be Back Before Midnight” by Peter Colley, on Saturday, November 3, 7:30 p.m.

Roseann Wilshere directs this outrageously funny and scary play.

Tickets are 200 pesos each and can be purchased at the theater’s box office from 10 a.m. to noon each day of the run (until November 11) and one hour before curtain.

Arrive early and enjoy good parking and a drink on the theater’s Angel Terrace before the performance and during intermission. Call 766-0954 to leave messages regarding requests for changes in reserved seating.

ASA meets Monday

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) meets Monday, November 5, 10 a.m. at La Bodega Restaurant (16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic), when the speaker will be sculptor Francisco Quiroz of Art 21 in Guadalajara.

ASA is a gathering of about 100 artists who get together on the first Monday of each month to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside community. Coffee is on at 9:30 a.m.

Bronzes on show

Acclaimed sculptor Robert Burns Wilson came out of retirement last year for his first gallery show in a decade.  He is now showing 60 works at the Galeria Sol Mexicano (Colon 13, Ajijic), with receptions open to the public scheduled for Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, 3-6 p.m.

Wilson’s bronze and stoneware pieces have set the standard for sculptors in the Lakeside area for many years. Don’t miss this!

Lovely gardens

Painter Nancy Gray opens the art season at La Bella Vida’s new location, Constitucion 6 in Ajijic, on Friday, November 9, 3-6 p.m. Her collection is entitled “Casa y Jardin” and features paintings of the lovely gardens and the distinctive features of the Mexican home.

The reception and exhibit will be held in the boutique’s beautiful gardens. Refreshments will be served.

Book-signing

The premiere book-signing of Janice Kimball’s newly completed novel “Three in a Cage” takes place at Aztec Art and Weaving Studios on Friday, November 9, 4-9 p.m.

There will be impromptu readings by the author and Max Bird (a real parrot and public relations director at Aztec studios), the primary character in the book. The event will be ‘MCd” by poet Jim Tipton and margaritas and snacks will be provided.

The studio is in West Ajijic across the Carretera from the Rancho del Oro serpent mural east of Rio Bravo.

Storytellers

Show up at Storytellers on Tuesday, November 13, 4 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society gazebo. The cash bar will open at 3:30 p.m. You’ll hear original works about “family” by Lakeside writers. Laugh a little and cry a little with readers that include Judy Dykstra-Brown, Mel Goldberg, Margaret Van Every and Michael Warren.

Voluntary donations will be collected for the Jim Collums Education Fund.

NCA

Los Niños de Chapala y Ajijic (NCA) is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, December 1, 4-11 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS).

Tickets are 250 pesos each and include great music by ANIKAN and Tony’s Restaurant’s famous BBQ ribs and chicken plus one margarita or soft drink.

Find the tickets at LCS, Actinver Ajijic, the NCA Chapala office (765-7032), the NCA Bazaar (east of S&S Auto), Salvador’s (Wednesday tianguis only) Mel’s Diner (back of Ajijic Hotel) or call (376) 108-0303 for reservations for parties of four or more.

NCA provides scholarships to about 200 children who otherwise would not be able to afford to stay in school.
