Bronzes on show

Acclaimed sculptor Robert Burns Wilson came out of retirement last year for his first gallery show in a decade.  He is now showing 60 works at the Galeria Sol Mexicano (Colon 13, Ajijic), with receptions open to the public scheduled for Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, 3-6 p.m.

Wilson’s bronze and stoneware pieces have set the standard for sculptors in the Lakeside area for many years. Don’t miss this!

Artists

The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will be out in full force on the Ajijic plaza Sunday, November 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Expect to see fine examples of painting, sculpture, engraving, jewelry design, photography and more.

Featured artists will be Julie Hensley, Ken Gosh, Gwynne Lott, Diane Yokom, Socorro Salazar, Nancy Greenheart, Jeanne Campos, Maria Di Paola Blum, Paulina Carretero, Susy Wright, Barbara Passarello, Judy McKinnon, Benjamine, Janey Marquez, Deb Fry, Susan Reynolds and Luz Preciado.

ASA is a 30-year-old organization of artists who gather each month (first Monday) to exchange ideas and promote art in the Lakeside area.

Storytellers

Show up at Storytellers on Tuesday, November 13, 4 p.m. in the Lake Chapala Society gazebo. The cash bar will open at 3:30 p.m. You’ll hear original works on the theme of “family” by Lakeside writers. Laugh a little and cry a little listening to readers that include Judy Dykstra-Brown, Mel Goldberg, Margaret Van Every and Michael Warren.

Voluntary donations will be collected for the Jim Collums Education Fund.

Garden Club

With U.S. Thanksgiving falling on November 22 this year, the Lake Chapala Garden Club has moved their meeting date to Wednesday, November 14.

This month’s garden tour will be in the village of Ajijic, followed by lunch at La Nueva Posada at noon.

La Nueva Posada has teamed up with Lois Cugini of Opus Boutique to present a gala pre-holiday fashion show and a special lunch menu. The show will begin at 12:30 p.m. Garden Club members and guests will receive a 10-percent discount on purchases made at the show.

The Lake Chapala Garden Club is open to everyone. To attend the gala, contact membership chairperson Judy Keck no later than Monday, November 12. Visit the Garden Club website at www.lakechapalagardenclub.org.

Auditions

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) holds auditions for its annual musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” on Friday and Saturday, November 16 and 17, 10 a.m. at the theater.

Director Dave McIntosh is looking for 12 men and nine women of various ages and types.

Barbara Clippinger will choreograph the show and Judy Hendricks is the musical director (the rumor is that there will be a live orchestra – what fun!).

Written by Don McKellar and Bob Martin, with music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the play is described as a “joyous spoof of a 1920s song and dance frolic as imagined by an obsessive 21st century musical aficionado.”

Those auditioning should bring a song of their choice with a back up CD. Dress for movement. There are also a couple of non-singing roles.

Performance dates are February 16 to 26, 2013.

The Crow

Local author Harriet Hart has published her second children’s book, titled “Carmelita Crow.” The book features illustrations done by the children in Efren Gonzalez’s free art classes.

The book sells for 150 pesos and is available at Gonzalez’s gallery at Marcos Castellanos 7 in Ajijic. All profits go to the children’s art program there.

Music Appreciation Society

The Music Appreciation Society (MAS) held a garden party to honor their supporters October 30 in lieu of their traditional season kick-off party. The guests at La Nueva Posada were treated to the music of Victor Garcia and his Melodia Acustica group.

MAS’ board of directors reluctantly cancelled their 2012-2013 season due to the closing of Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago for renovations.
