Rural photos

Amazingly beautiful photographs by Rodd Pye taken during Xill Fessenden’s recent field workshops are on exhibit at Ajijic’s Quattro Gallery (Colon 9).

Fessenden is continuing her Rural Villages of Jalisco Field Photographic Workshops every Thursday through June. Participants visit rural towns, old haciendas, fields of sugar and take in bucolic scenery.

The workshops are open to all levels of visual artists and photographers. They will also be entitled to a review of their images on any Tuesday at Quattro Gallery.

Shutterbugs

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit Seven sponsored their First Annual Shutterbug Contest requesting local Lakeside photos for their 2014 Auxiliary calendar. There were several entries put on display from which the guests picked their favorites. Congratulations go out to the winners: Kay Hedley, Kenneth Bridges, Patricia Newman, Mary E. Rushworth, Phil Ferry, Rosemary Woodruff and Barbara C. Prince. The winners received a gift certificate for a meal at the Legion, their photo in the 2014 calendar and a free calendar for each winning photo.

Many thanks to Barbara Madren for greeting guests and handing out the ballot forms, Jami Keehen for setting up tables, the kitchen staff for their hard work and everyone who helped to make this event a success.

Two to tango

Tango masters Anita and Juan Rosa will present a hot, glamorous program of tango dancing on Thursday, April 11, 6 p.m. at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago in La Floresta. The music will be live. VIP tickets are 250 pesos and general admission is 200 pesos. They are on sale now at the auditorium, Diane Pearl Colecciones and SuperLake Market.

Collective exhibit

The MEXICOELECTIVE group of local and expat artists held their third annual exhibit and sale on Saturday, March 23 at Hacienda del Lago Hotel in Ajiic.

A piece of art donated by each artist was raffled to benefit COMUSIDA (the state-run community outreach AIDS program). There was also a dance performance and a menswear fashion show. 

The featured artists were Victor Alcazar, painting; Jaime Barbiery, artistic photography; Debra Fry, wearable art; Heber Barajas, jewelry; Juan Ramon Soto, terracotta and Karen Spencer,  photography.

The raffle garnered 1,960 pesos and was handed over to Chapala COMUSIDA Jose Reyes Hernandez Ortega immediately after the show.

Feria

The Feria del Maestros del Arte committee will hold a general meeting on Tuesday, April 9, 3 p.m. at Casa del Sol B & B Inn, (Javier Mina 7, Ajijic). The meeting is open to the public. Anyone who is interested in this amazing cultural event that takes place in the fall is encouraged to attend and bring their ideas and enthusiasm. The committee is also looking for volunteers to help out in all areas.

Dance

Relive the songs from 1950’s & 60’s American Bandstand with Jerry Morse and Jack Fallon La Bodega, Tuesday, April 16. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. Call for reservations at 766-1002.

New show

Local painter David Kerstetter will open an exhibition of his work Friday, April 12, 5 p.m. at the Ajijic Cultural Center located on Ajijc’s principal plaza. Kerstetter paints in oil in a bold realism or abstract realism style. Cocktails will be served.

Ballet folklorico

Celebrating their 25th anniversary, Ballet Folklorico Ixtlahuacan will perform a new program Sunday, April 14, noon at Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago. The dance troupe is well-known for its rescue of nearly extinct folk dances of Mexico. Their technique has won them five state championships.

The performance on April 14 will include live music. Ballet Folklorico Ixtlahuacan thanks the Lakeside community for their ongoing support. Proceeds from this performance will go toward a trip to Oaxaca to investigate dances there.

Tickets are 120 and 150 pesos (depending upon seating) and are on sale at the auditorium and at SuperLake Market.
