Bon voyage snowbirds

“Luna” and “Winston,” real life canine characters of “Who Rescued Who: Tales of Street Dogs and the People Who Love Them,” want to wish their snowbird friends a furry farewell and a safe journey home.

If suitcases aren’t already full, and you need some last-minute gifts, please join them for coffee on the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) patio Monday, April 22, 12:30 p.m.  Everyone who joins in  will get a raffle ticket for a free book.  Bring your camera if you’d like a picture to take home.

Book launch

Judy Dykstra Brown and Tony Moriarty will launch their new book, “Lessons from a Grief Diary: Rebuilding Your Life after the Death of a Loved One,” on Tuesday, April 23, from 3-5 p.m. at Viva Mexico Restaurant in San Juan Cosala.

During the illness and death of her husband, and for eight years afterwards, Dykstra Brown kept a diary that chronicled her life. When she allowed her friend Tony Moriarty, a clinical psychologist, to read the entries that dealt with her loss, he found her account to be a compelling record of how to deal with pain in a life-affirming manner. The excerpts from her diaries, poems and e-mails, combined with his comments on what other grievers can learn from both her experience and their own, furnish a valuable guide for anyone suffering the death of a family member or close friend.

There will be two book launches, one at Viva Mexico in San Juan Cosala and the other in Ajijic at a date to be announced. Since Viva Mexico has generously insisted on doing the food for the San Juan Cosala launch, a portion of book sales from that launch will be donated to Operation Feed.

Live from the Met

VIVA la Musica’s final bus trip to the “Live from the Met” broadcasts at Teatro Diana in Guadalajara will be on Saturday, April 27 for “Julius Caesar in Egypt” by Handel. This baroque masterpiece tells the tale of intrigue between Cleopatra and Caesar. It’s splendid and shouldn’t be missed. If you want to see a clip of the opera, type “Natalie Dessay in Haendel’s Giulio Cesare” into the YouTube search box.

Get your tickets for the bus trip at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) on Thursday and Friday mornings or by contacting Marshall Krantz This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
