Ribera arts review - February 21, 2014

“Hooray for Hollywood,” an original music and dance extravaganza written and directed by Barbara Clippinger, opens at Lakeside Little Theatre on Friday, February 21, running through Tuesday, March 4.

Curtain time is at 7:30 p.m. for week night and Saturday performances and 3 p.m. for Sunday matinees. Tickets, going for 250 pesos, may be purchased at the LLT box office one hour prior to each show. Guitar stars in San Juan

Talented guitarists Juan Castañón and Tim Tracey are booked for a one-night gig Saturday, February 22, 8 p.m., at La Rueda Café Galeria, Porfirio Díaz 120 in San Juan Cosalá. The duo’s nostalgia show is titled Two Folks-Old Tunes.

Castañon, a master of jazz and folk music, comes from the city of Monterrey. Tracey, a rock artist, hails from Washington state.

La Rueda is located about half way between the San Juan plaza and Viva Mexico Restaurant.

ASA plaza show

The Ajijic Society of the Arts will hold its monthly sales exhibit at the Ajijic plaza on Sunday, February 23, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ASA member artists will be out to display a big selection of their paintings, sculptures, photographs, handicrafts, jewelry and wearable art.

Wordsmiths powwow

The deadline to sign-up for the 10th annual Lake Chapala Writers’ Conference is looming, with registration closing Tuesday, February 25. The event opens Wednesday, February 26, 5 p.m.  with a welcome cocktail party at the Danza del Sol venue.  Two full days of conferences and panels discussion on writing themes follow on Thursday and Friday. Accomplished authors attending as guest speakers are Lawrence Hill, Claudia Long, Miranda Hill and John Scherber.

Comedy reading

The Naked Stage Readers Theatre will present back-to-back performances of the Alan Ayckbourn play “Comic Potential,” on Friday, February 28, Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2, 4 p.m., at the Plaza de la Ribera playhouse, Rio Bravo 10, behind Daniel’s Restaurant. The show is directed by Russell Mack. Admission is 80 pesos per person. Folklorico troupe double bill

The Ballet Folclórico Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos has scheduled two lively shows at the Auditorio de la Ribera, La Floresta, appearing first on Sunday, March 9 and returning on Sunday, April 6, both starting at noon.  Each performance will feature a distinct repertoire of traditional Mexican folk dances, backed by live mariachi music. The group is a five-time winner of Jalisco’s Rafael Zamarripa folk dance prize for its outstanding choreography and costuming.  Admission is priced at 150 and 200 pesos per person, depending upon seating choice. Tickets are now on sale at the auditorium box office and SuperLake.  

New exhibit

A collective exhibit, “Un sueño compartido II,” featuring 30 diverse works by 17 talented Jalisco-based artists has opened  at the Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo, the former railway station located at Av. Gonzalez Gallo 1500 in Chapala. 

The show forms part of the Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s program to take art shows to many corners of the state. Among the artists showing their work are  Lewis Kant, José Luis Malo, José Parra and Ricardo Ramírez.  Those interested in purchasing any of the works may ask staff at the center about the sale possibilities once the exhibit has concluded in mid-March.
