LLT Opener

Daily productions of “Murder by Misadventure,” the opening production of the 51st season of the Lakeside Little Theatre, continue through Sunday, October 11.

There will be 3 p.m. matinees of this mystery thriller on Sunday, October 4 and Sunday, October 11. The curtain for all other shows is at 7:30 p.m.

Debra Bowers directs a five-member cast that includes Ed Tasca, Ken Yuakiwchuk, Kathleen Morris and Michael Warren.

Queen Xochitl

A unique multi-media theatrical event based on local oral legend of the founding of Ajijic will be staged Wednesday, October 7, 7 p.m at the Auditorio de la Ribera del Lago.

“The Legend of Queen Xochitl Michi-Cihualli” was conceived by Antonio Lopez Vega and members of Ajijic’s Cochera Cultural.  This group brings together local youth and professional mentors to explore performance arts to honor and preserve both pre and post-Hispanic Lakeside history, culture and arts.

Cochera Cultural launched its first youth program with children aged from 4 to 15, working with artists, writers, dancers puppeteers, designers and experienced theater mentors.

Xochitl Michi was first brought to the stage in July for the children’s families thanks to support of the Lake Chapala Society and Lakeside Little Theater, says Program Director Jennifer Stanley. “Xochitl Michi is a magical piece of local oral tradition. we want the kids to have the opportunity to share their wonderful efforts with the public.”

Lopez Vega, who narrates the play, first heard of the legend as a young child from his grandmother. He says bringing the story to the stage grew from the collaboration of friends with whom he shared the tale.

A pre-show performance of pre-Hispanic music starts at 6:30 p.m. The intermission will feature finger foods, a complementary glass of wine, art, beverage and food venders and a live auction.

The remainder of the program will include a series of special guest performances with pre-Hispanic dance and a set by the band Tribu, a pioneer in transporting ancient Mexican music to a contemporary world.

Advance tickets are 200 pesos at Diane Pearl Colecciones and the auditorium. Proceeds from the event and auction will fund mentors for future youth programming by Cochera Cultura and to support the 3rd Annual Cultural Sangre Viva.
