For the young at heart
The Centro Regional de Estudios Musicales (CREM) and the Ballet Clásico Chapala will present the Saint-Saëns suite “Carnival of the Animals” and Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” on Friday, June 3 and Saturday, June 4, 7 p.m. at the Auditorio de la Ribera, La Floresta.
The program will feature 37 costumed dancers, with 25 musicians playing in an improvised orchestra pit at the front of the stage.
Tickets priced at 200 pesos are available at the Ballet Clásico studio, Avenida Gonzalez Gallo 27-A, opposite Chapala’s Cristiania Park; the Dorika office, Marcos Castellanos 3, a half-block below Ajijic’s San Andres parish; and the auditorium lobby box office.
New photography club
Chuni Medeles, director of the Ajijic Cultural Center, along with Jill Flyer and Beto Rock, have announced the start of the Photography Club of Ajijic. The club is for anyone, amateur or professional, who wants to get or give information on cameras and photography in general, or simply to exchange ideas and experiences in a social setting.
The group will meet the second Monday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. The first meeting will be June 13 on the second floor of the Ajijic Cultural Center.
The cost is 190 pesos per meeting and includes two glasses of wine (or other cold drink, if preferred) and snacks along with fascinating talks by noted lakeside photographers on aspects of photography that will be of interest to club members. The first two meetings will feature a slide show of 100 masters of photography, with discussion by the members.
A theme for a monthly contest will be selected and the following month a winner will be selected. The wining photo will be hung in the Cultural Center for that month.

ASA meets
The Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) will hold its monthly meeting Monday, June 6 at La Bodega Restaurant, 16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic.
The coffee is on at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting begins 10 a.m. On the agenda this month is an update on the globo (paper balloon) teams and Marion Decker will talk about the Open Studios event.
Elections will be held for first vice president, second vice president and treasurer. Nominations will be taken from the floor.
After the business, there will be a dynamic TED presentation, subject to be announced at the meeting.
San Antonio Fiestas
In addition to the usual hoopla surrounding the fiestas patronales in San Antonio Tlayacapan, a program of cultural events brings free live entertainment to the central plaza each evening, June 5 through 13, 8 p.m.
The schedule includes Ballet Folklórico Huitzillín on Sunday, June 5; singer Luis Enrique Sánchez, June 6; Coro Redes y Cantos de Chapala, June 7; Academia de Ukeleles de la Ribera, June 8; Ballet Folklórico Macehuani, June 9; Academia D’esperanto and Ballet Folklórico Ixtlacateotl, June 10, Ballet Folklórico Chapala, June 11, Rondalla Voces del Alma, June 12; and the play “Me quieres a pesar de los que dices” by the Grupo de Teatro Independiente de Chapala, June 13.
Typical dance bands take the stage nightly, 9:30 p.m., to keep the crowds jumping until the wee hours.
Nights of Magic
Noche Mágica, a multi-genre show encompassing dance, instrumental music and a touch of circus fun, comes to two lakeside venues this month. The program features jazz dance instructor Andrea Sarahí Ulloa and students of the Academia Danza Contemporánea, Guadalajara tango pair Joel de la O and Güera Ascencio, along with a demonstration of Argentine gaucho malambo dance, acts by the Circo Greca company and live music by a dozen young musicians from the Academia Musa directed by Moisés Real Gómez.
The show debuts Friday, June 17, 7 p.m., at Chapala’s Centro Cultural González Gallo, with free admittance to limited seating space.

Tallboys say goodbye
The Tallboys farewell appearance in Ajijic will be at the Lake Chapala Society Summer Picnic, Saturday, June 18 from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Advance tickets are 100 pesos for members, 150 pesos for non-members and 180 pesos at the door.
The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, corn-on-the-cob and all the trimmings. A pie and cake sale, 50/50 raffle, and a watermelon seed spitting contest are also in the works.
