Art show

Artist and art collector James Broehi is sponsoring a showing at the Centro Cultural Ajijic of 18 pieces of art found in Mexico and attributed by him to famous artists such as Millet, Manet, Degas, Homer, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Munch, Klimt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Kirchner, Picasso, Rivera, Merida, Siqueiros, Tamayo, Bacon, Matta and Pollock.

A full-time Ajijic resident, Broehi says: “One of the most exciting ways to discover who the great artists of the past were is to go looking. There are a number of things to keep in mind. Great art has traveled far from its origin and artists sometimes didn’t sign their pieces, the markings have faded or there has been a new artist’s name placed on it for any kind of reason.”

He says his goal is to attribute pieces which he has investigated so the public can see how these great artists expressed new ways of looking at life.

Broehi is willing to explain his methods of investigation and how he arrived at each attribution.

The show is up through Friday, September 9. For more information, email Broehi at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Editor’s note: When a painting has the append “attributed to,” it means that the work in question might come from the inscribed person.  It is important to remember that the append only carries validity when it comes from an art expert with in-depth knowledge of the artist in question.

Mark Twain

Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) continues its presentation of “Mark Twain, Uncensored” written by Ed Tasca – who also has the title role – Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 26-28.  (See story page 15.)

Tasca has purposely attempted to create a realistic Mark Twain, noting little-known events from the great author’s life, and including whimsical interruptions from real-life associates and Twain’s fictional characters to give his lecture presentation a rich theatrical scope. The result is a memoir of Twain, mostly invention, but derived from the writer’s biography, favorite subjects and irritants.

Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. evenings, and 3 p.m. for Sunday’s matinee. Tickets can be purchased at the LLT box office every day during the show, except Sunday. Watercolors

The Ajijic Society of the Arts will host artist and muralist Javier Zaragoza, who will talk about watercolors, at its meeting Monday, September 5, 10 a.m. at restaurant La Bodega (16 de Septiembre 124, Ajijic).

Zaragoza paints, teaches and exhibits at his Galeria Zaragoza on Constitucion 50 in Ajijic. Two Puerto Vallarta galleries also exhibit his work.

Zaragoza was awarded the Distinguished Senior Award by the Chapala municipal government on Friday, August 23 for his remarkable murals which are found throughout the Lakeside area.

Vintage photographs

Chapala’s Archivo Histórico is exhibiting a display of around 80 vintage photographs.

The collection includes images captured between the late 1800’s and the 1970’s showing lake and village scenes, vacation mansions, local people and famous personalities who lived and visited the area.

Although many of the pictures are not dated, a walk through the gallery gives the viewer an excellent sense of how Chapala and the lake have evolved over the past century and a quarter.

The Archivo is located on Avenida Madero, on the ground floor of Chapala city hall’s north wing. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays; morning hours only on weekends and holidays.
