ASA globo update

Ajijic Society of the Arts members are finishing up their large tissue paper balloons this week for the Saturday, September 10 Ajijic Regatta de Globos. President Marica Lavender says the group will have a tent set up at the southeast corner of the soccer field. ASA member Gravy Graves spearheaded and organized the project, in which members design their balloons, which are then built by globo expert Lalo Palma.

Palma has spent lifetime perfecting the delicate skill of gluing the balloons’ tissue paper layered seams. Kerosene soaked rags provide the fire power to heat the air that allows the balloons to take to the sky. Palma says that he has lifted up to 50 balloons each year, all without setting himself or a crew member on fire. Go watch them fly and burn at around 3 p.m.!
